Fr. Bob's Corner and more ... This weekend and Monday we celebrate two special days in the Church - All Saints Day and All Souls Day. It is a reminder to all of us that our home, our true home, is in heaven with our Father. It points us towards and fixes our gaze on the One who calls us to Himself. Our hearts are restless until they rest in You. All Saints Day celebrates the accomplishment of those who are in Heaven, seeing our Father face to face forever. They have receiv...ed their crown through running the race well - most of the time through suffering in faith and much of the time through the giving up of their lives for the sake of Gospel - There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. We ask saints to intercede for us with the Father as they see Him face to face. They are in a state of experiencing pure love, pure peace, and pure joy. While on this earth we get tastes of heaven. Saints experience the fullness of it. We can’t even fathom the awesomeness of heaven. Their function is to intercede for us and to pray for us. It is very important here to make a distinction - we do not become angels. They have a separate function. They are all together different beings. They serve as God’s messengers. Another important point is that only saints are in heaven. Those completely devoid of all stain of sin. Because it is heaven - only perfection and purity exist. It makes sense, then, that the Church gives to us the day after we celebrate All Saints Day that we celebrate All Souls Day - those loved ones of ours that have died with stains of sins on their souls, but are destined for heaven. They are in purgatory, and through our prayers and sacrifices wash their souls clean so that they may be saints in heaven with our Father - in His time. Why did God create purgatory? Why does it exist? It exists because God, in His infinite Mercy, does not want to the sinner to die. Our Father calls us to Him. He gives us tastes of heaven on earth and extends His mercy to us as sinners. Our goal - our ultimate goal - is to get to Heaven where we praise Him forever. Every other goal in our lives must revolve around this simple truth. Let us spend more time this week praising Him. May Our Lord Give You His Peace, Fr. Bob Fr. I was delighted to hear that Pope Francis has named Archbishop Wilton Gregory to the College of Cardinals. In my first year at Mundelein Seminary, then Fr. Greg...ory was my spiritual director and my professor of liturgy. Over all the intervening years, I have known him to be a man of integrity, intelligence, kindness, and deep spirituality. Congratulations to Cardinal-designate Gregory! See more
