JOB POSTING TIOGA COUNTY CONSERVATION DISTRICT Resource Conservationist... Tioga County Conservation District is seeking qualified applicants for a grant-funded, full time with benefits position of Resource Conservationist. The technician is responsible for administering the Dirt, Gravel, and Low Volume Road Environmentally Sensitive Maintenance Program. This position also assists with some responsibilities in the Chapter 105 Water Obstruction and Encroachment Permits program. The position requires reviewing project applications, conducting program outreach, and performing construction inspections. The candidate for this position will possess the quality to be highly motivated and be people-oriented. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to the success of this position. This position requires walking and traversing all types of terrain in all weather conditions REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Bachelor Degree in Natural Sciences, Environmental Resources Management, Environmental Science, or a closely related environmental field Knowledge of soils, hydrology, land use, geography, ecology, and natural resources Knowledge of or ability to learn road construction and maintenance Best Management Practices Knowledge of or ability to learn state regulations as they relate to Chapter 102 Erosion and Sediment Control and Chapter 105 Water Obstruction and Encroachment Permits Experience in Microsoft Programs and GIS/ArcView Ability to read and understand construction plans and maps preferred Ability or ability to learn and utilize surveying techniques Must be able to perform routine duties without direct supervision both in an office and field setting Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing Starting salary is $15.00 per hour with benefits. As temperature rise here in Tioga County, amphibians will begin to emerge from their hibernation. Spring is a vital season for a lot of frog and salamander species due to the increase in vernal pools. These pools are vital for the survival of a lot of amphibians. They provide a safe place to lay eggs without the fear of predation. Keep an eye on your vernal pools to see what is growing inside. The Spring Peeper (psuedacris Crucifer) is one of the first signs of spring. If... you are lucky enough to live near a vernal pool, pond, or wetland, you will have the chance the hear their distinguished call. It can be be described as a shrill peep. Attached is a wonderful video of the spring peeper’s call. These little frogs can be identified by their call but also by a dark X marking on their backs. Spring peepers will sing all night long. For you novice Herpetologists, it can be fun to learn various frog calls. Let us know what you are hearing and finding in your backyard!
