CONGRATULATIONS to our very own 3rd year OTD student, Sarah Zagorac! Sarah was awarded the 2020 POTA OT Student Award of Recognition for her tireless efforts to obtain reimbursement for OT and mental health care in community-based settings due to billing restrictions. Sarah collaborated with leadership at POTA as well as practitioners and faculty to initiate a Mental Health Task Force which is currently exploring barriers to reimbursement in community-based mental health settings. This task force hopes to address the identified barriers in the near future to increase OTs ability to provide quality OT care in community-based mental health settings. Sarah is also working with another team through POTA to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice efforts. We are so proud of your accomplishments!

Advocacy at its BEST! We are proud to relay that our very own alumni, Nuriya Neumann, MS, OTR/L submitted and received an RA approved action to develop a task group with the aim to publish a position paper denouncing the attempts to change sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression and condemn the practice of Conversion Therapy to show support and allyship to the LGBTQIA+ communities that we serve. Well done, Nuriya!

Congratulations to our recent alum, Dr Rachel Kim who will be receiving the TRAINEE POSTER PRESENTATION AWARD at the 2020 International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) Meeting. Rachel’s capstone work involved developing an item pool of fine motor, inclusive of standardized methods for administration and scoring the items, as the first step to developing a spinal cord injury clinical trial measure. The award is quite competitive, and is given in recognition of significant and rigorous work by a trainee. Dr. Kim will be presenting her work entitled Development and Initial Validation of an Item Pool of Fine Motor, and receiving the award on Sept. 3, 2020 between 4:10-4:30, at the virtual ISCoS meeting.
