The Clock Guy

Well it's time for daylight savings clock adjustments again and here's how to do it without damaging your clock. Most of your tall case clocks, no matter how old they are, can be moved counterclockwise, despite what your grandfather always told you NOT to do. The key to finding out if they can be moved backward is just attempt to move the hand backward and if you feel any resistance, STOP, you cannot move it backwards without damaging the strike armature. Just stop the pendul...um for an hour. If it does move backward (you may hear clicking) just move it the the correct time and the chimes will/should readjust themselves. Most old mantle and wall clocks cannot be moved counterclockwise. Just stop the clock for an hour and your all set. Cuckoo clocks can easily be moved backward without problems. Again, if you feel resistance, STOP. Stop the pendulum for an hour. All quartz battery clocks can be moved either way without a problem BUT I recommend using the adjustment dial on the back of the movement. Not a good idea to use the hands to turn the clock back (or forward). You may have done it that way for years but you can slowly damage the clock and shorten it's life overall. Daylight Savings Ends Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour before or after tomorrow morning at 2 AM. Clocks made before 1970 may or may not be able to be turned backwards without damaging them. Check your instructions or call your Clock Guy to find out.
