In the spring of 2020, I received an email from Maddie Fisher, the PAHS Council Vice President wanting to discuss the idea of creating a painting for them as their class gift. Shortly after, the class council and I met via Zoom. First, I want to say that these women were incredibly professional. They shared the purpose behind the gift...a way to highlight, celebrate, and commemorate their class during such unusual times.... They shared their love for their classmates, the school, and our town. They wanted the art to reflect that. We brainstormed some ideas and decided that Washington field was important...as was the moment of throwing caps in the air...since they would not be having a traditional graduation ceremony. I could envision the setting of the piece, the time of day, and the caps... I couldn't figure out the best way to incorporate the idea of the Phoenix. I knew that this was the heart of the piece. It sent up a concept that highlighted all they wanted in the piece, but the more I set with the concept, the more I felt like it was missing the "rise". It felt so important to give them a feeling that they could do anything...that they have everything they need to light the world on fire. My concept didn't do that..yet. So it sat. It sat for a while. The breakthrough came on a run a couple of months later. An image of the caps in the air forming the Phoenix came to me. It was perfect. I started to fiddle with the idea...and eventually ended up going all-in on the idea by creating a ghost image of the Phoenix rising from the sky..mimicking the caps soaring high...symbolizing the Class of 2020's rise and expanse as they take their next steps forward. It felt right. The bold color, the scale of the Phoenix, the energy of the caps...it all just felt right. The class didn't get the traditional ceremony...but they weren't meant to. They were meant to create their own path...just as they've done so many times before. I hope this piece becomes a reminder to the Class of 2020 of their strength and courage and all that is to come as they continue to rise. #phoenixille #rise #phoenix #strength #makeyourownpath

Close up of a new piece I’m wrapping up. I feel like I’m in a pink phase right now which is different for me. It’s a commission that I’ve been planning and working on for about 9 months. Sometimes the concepts just flow into me for commissioned pieces. Other times, it takes time for the idea to take shape - but it always does. This was an especially important piece to get right, and I am so grateful that the client allowed me space to process and create. ... Looking forward to revealing the whole piece sometime soon. #pink #commission #client #custom #phoenixville #becoming #comingsoon

Many years ago, I was in DC for one of my dearest friend's weddings. It was absolutely pouring the night we arrived. This piece was inspired by the #dupontcircle metro that we took on the way to the rehearsal dinner. First, it is insane how steep and long the escalators are for this station...my hands were sweating, and I was totally feeling my fear of heights kick in. ... Second, the rain was just pouring into the station...all over the escalators...how is that even ok? Rain...just pouring in all over escalators? The most memorable part of the night for me, however, was when I made a big deal out of buying my friend a round at the bar when we arrived to celebrate him and his wedding. I asked what everyone wanted, placed the order, reached into my purse to pay...realized that I didn't have my wallet...asked my husband...he decided to leave his back at the hotel. Started panicking that I lost my wallet. Looked around frantically for what to do next...finally asking my friend to pay...#awkward...and spending the remainder of the night wondering if the wallet was at the hotel or lost. It was, in fact, at the hotel...just sitting there on the bed. Ultimately, it was a fun night...and the wedding the next day was epic...seriously one of the best weddings ever. #dcmetro #dupontcircle #headingdown #bestfriendswedding

It's been awhile since I've done an intro post, and since we've had some new people join the party, I thought I'd come on and tell you a little about myself. When I was 10, I used to climb out of my sisters bedroom window on the roof over our front porch and draw in my sketch book. The view looked out over a city side street with a front row view of Kodak Park's factory buildings. ... Some mornings, we'd wake up to ash or soot from the smoke stacks blanketing the cars that lined the street. Growing up, we didn't have much, but I don't ever remember wanting things. I've always had a strong knowledge in me that I was supposed to do something important. I think I'm still trying to figure out what that is. I am happiest when I am making art. I bumped and bruised my way through school...and then some college...and then work...and then more college. It always felt like I was duct taping my life together. I worked a corp career for 10 years - the people I worked with were my family...I met my husband there. I was always wishing for time and space to make my art. In 2011, with two babies and a new home, I turned in my corp. career, computer, and car to be a stay at home mom / artist.... momist, artmom? Everything after seems like a blur... I worked in the studio at night after the kids went to sleep. Did a bunch of shows. Met a bunch of people. Sold a bunch of art. Drank a lot of coffee. Along the way I made some murals, got a studio in town, got a bigger studio in town. And today, I get to spend my days in the studio - making art, and helping artists with their businesses - and being a mom. This is me. It's really so nice to meet you. I'm so glad you're here. #hello #welcome #nicetomeetyou #itsme #momist #artist

Dec 11 - Last Stand - @25daysofminis sold The time of year when the trees are mostly bare, except for a few who stand strong, clinging to their little leaves even through the storms and the wind and the cold, drizzly November rain.... #25daysofminis #backyard #november

Dec 10 - @25daysofminis Becky’s Barn No need to adjust your screens - yes, it’s a barn and yes I painted it. ... My cousin's farm in Upstate NY has horses, goats, chickens, and lots of room to explore. She quit her job a few years ago to make handmade soaps and sells them at farmer's markets, craft shows, and from her pop up events at the farm. @kbwhitefarm She is the strongest person I know...and tries so hard to keep everyone in the family connected. We spent time on the farm a few years ago for a pig roast, and the boys had the best time being with the farm animals. The chickens are still shaken up from all the attention. https://www.teresahaag.com/product-page/becky-s-barn-dec-10

Dec. 9 - @25daysofminis Joel lives up the long set of stairs in the top floor apartment next to the studio. He spends a lot of time outside behind his house comfortably squatting on the side of the alley puffing on his e-cigarette. ... Wearing worn down black flip flops and an oversized hoodie, except for on the hottest days, he sits, his mind somewhere else, while white mist swirls around his head as he exhales deeply. While I think he's led a pretty hard life, he always greets me with a warm hello, and he always asks me what my most recent artwork is that I'm working on. I wonder where he came from, and what he wanted to be when he grew up. #25daysofminis #art #painting #mini

Dec 8 @25daysofminis Morning Run When I was in high school, a friend of mine was a runner. I remember thinking how intrigued I was that someone could run for miles at a time. Shortly after, I decided to give it a try, and soon, I myself was a runner. I would get home from school and run over to the zoo and back.... Over the years, my running has ebbed and flowed, but even today, I continue a running practice. It's a source of power and peace for me. When I stepped outside this particular morning, the sunrise stopped me in my tracks.
