Children learn by playing. Play with children, and speak to them. Be interested in whatever interests them. That's what they need!

When working with elementary aged children: Figuring out if the issue is articulation/pronunciation or language/vocabulary/sentence structure or a combination is important. Certain issues can negatively affect learning to read well, comprehension, doing math word problems, writing, spelling, etc. at that age. ... Social communication with peers and adults also needs to be good to move ahead socially. Looking at the whole picture is very important. Taking care of specific deficits as quickly as possible is also important.

What if a child says Pinish for Finish?...but can say the F sound in other words. My reply: You say FIN and have her point to a picture of a fin. You say PIN and have her--> "Point to what I'm saying"...just to make sure she can hear the difference. Cover your mouth with a paper plate or other object to make sure she can tell without looking at your face. Have her practice saying FIN with a picture of a fin on a shark or dolphin. Have her practice saying PIN with a picture of a straight pin or a bowling pin. Show her the picture of FIN as you practice FINISH. If she doesn't get it break the word down to FIH...NNNNISH. What she is doing is called stopping. She's stopping the airflow of the fricative/air-flowing F with her lips and it comes out as a stop sound...P.

Hi! I'm a pediatric Speech Language Pathologist. I wrote a book called Speech Therapy at Home for parents or anyone who wants to learn more about what speech therapists know. It comes with phone or face-time consultations with me. Right now it is at an introductory price of $25. It's a great resource to have on hand, even when the child is getting treatment. Anyone interested can text BOOK to 201-nine-one-nine-4805 to go through the ordering process. I am always available to answer questions. I am also a special educator and learning disabilities specialist (bilingual English/Spanish). Any questions about reading/math problems (for kids) or accent improvement (for adults) can be asked of me, as well.

What is a SPEECH EVALUATION? It is used to evaluate skills. There will be a section listing "History" which is comprised of anything you tell a therapist about how speech skills were and how they have changed. It will have a section regarding "Speech/Articulation" that shows any specific sounds that need work on. It will have a section on "Language" that will show how the child does showing how much he or she understands or comprehends "Receptive Language". It will have a sec...tion showing how much he or she is able to use language to report, label, answer questions, ask questions, describe, etc. "Expressive Language". It will have a summary section that tells if there is any level of delay (in a percentage). [For example, a 36 month old child (36 months) who is functioning at the "typical 24 month old level" will have a one-year or 33% (one-third) delay in skills.]. In the summary section there also may be mention of any speech disorders or speech processes suspected or diagnosed, such as Verbal Apraxia, Fronting, Backing, Final Consonant Deletion, Syllable Deletion, etc. Knowing this information will help a parent or therapist to determine a baseline of functioning or skills. Then they have the option to re-measure the child's skills in a year's time to see how much improvement has been made. [For example, the child has gone from a 33% delay to a 10% delay or is at age-appropriate speech or language]. This information is for the parent to use in whatever way he or she wishes. See more

Does anyone have any questions regarding speech or learning that they'd like me to answer?

Speech therapy is helping others to communicate better. The clients can be infants up to the elderly. Language: Expressive Communication = This can be expressing ideas, requesting, reporting something, etc. via eye gaze, gestures, sign language, sounds, words, phrases or sentences. It can also be helping others to understand instructions or requests made by others to them better. (Ex: Put this in the box, Come here). that is Receptive Communication. Speech refers to artic...ulation: If a person is not articulating well...not formed well with the tongue, jaw, teeth, etc....sounds missing or substituted or added...speaking with a heavy accent that hinders others from understanding...the therapist can teach the person how to make sounds correctly and how to include all sounds correctly. When working at a hospital one may see patients after stroke and must test speech and language skills as well as swallowing skills. There may be impairment of recollection of words, or ability to control the mouth correctly to form words well, as well as swallowing difficulties or forming sentences correctly. There may be impairments in writing and reading (these are other forms of communication. Some people have difficulties with the voice: not loud enough, too hoarse, too high in tone, too low in tone. There are many things to consider in speech therapy. I work with children who are younger than 3 years old. I train their parents how to play with the children in certain ways that help there speech and language progress. It is called Early Intervention in the US. See more

Think of what a child can already say and use those sounds, syllables or words to make longer utterances. This is the basis of the Speech Stories approach I developed. I saw a child who could say duck, mama, and baby. We did a lot of activities about mama duck and baby duck. Now he's using more phrases, instead of only single words!
