To our Queen of Burpees, Peggy. Two years ago today, Peggy walked into our gym. She wanted to know if we could help her regain confidence because she was afraid of falling alone. We spoke and agreed on two things. First - we would do her personal training sessions in the same room as group classes so that there would never be a division between Peggy's needs and anyone training with us. There would be no special treatment.... Second - Peggy would start by learning how to do a burpee. Rather than fear falling, we would deconstruct the act of getting from standing, to the floor and back up unassisted. Spending one day per week each on squatting, pulling and pushing movements. I didn't realize it at the time, but her pursuit of these two objectives would fundamentally change me as a Coach (and all our staff) and our community through her example. 4-5 days per week, she's the first in the building at 5:30am. She never complains. She cheers for others to finish the workout. She works. So. Damn. Hard. These days, she does burpees for reps (and pretty much everything else). She routinely leaves her walking stick places because she doesn't need it. This morning she muscle snatched 20 pounds for reps and frankly made it look better than some of the 20 somethings. The Open is coming! More importantly the Open BRACKET is coming! This year, we wanted to create a different way to engage with the CrossFit Open since many of you are at home. Starting Sunday, we have a bracket of movements from the Open in years past that will go head to head. Vote for your favorite! New Benchmark! Introducing, Walker this Wednesday! Madam C. J. Walker (born Sarah Breedlove; December 23, 1867 May 25, 1919) was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. She is recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in America in the Guinness Book of World Records.... Walker made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of cosmetics and hair care products for Black women through the business she founded, Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company. She became known also for her philanthropy and activism. She made financial donations to numerous organizations and became a patron of the arts. Villa Lewaro, Walker's lavish estate in Irvington, New York, served as a social gathering place for the African-American community. At the time of her death, she was considered the wealthiest Black businesswoman and wealthiest self-made Black woman in America. 41 is significant for this workout because it honors her incredible work ethic. Orphaned at the age of 7, she began working at age 10, passing away young at age 51. In the 41 years she worked she amassed a fortune of over 1 million dollars and used it to better her surrounding communities. Significance of the reps used:... 1 Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected President of South Africa and first Black head of state. 5 He served as President for 5 years. 11 He was the 11th President of the African National Congress. 27 He served 27 years in prison for trying to overthrow the racist apartheid system of government. 250 Mandela’s work earned 250 International Honors including the Nobel Peace Prize. Our top scores will benefit Morris Home, the only residential recovery program in the country (located here in Philadelphia) to offer comprehensive services specifically for the transgender community. Learn how to handstand walk! Walking on your feet is so last year, want to learn how to gain more confidence while upside down? Get involved with our new cycle of Elevate! What if I can’t handstand walk at all?... That’s why we’re here! Over 6 weeks, Coach @mccoachgram is going to lead you through safe and effective progressions to learn to handstand walk. Class will be in person on Saturdays at 830am and participants will have 2 at home accessory workouts to do during each week. I’m still working on confidence in a handstand, is this too advanced? No! As with any movement, there are progressions and over 6 weeks we’ll be building should mobility and stability - two things which are important for ALL our athletes. If you’re working on confidence upside down, this class will feature a number of portions, this isn’t just going to be trying to kick up for 45 mins... How do I get involved? Existing members can sign up for this 6 week cycle for just $25! The program is capped at 9 people and we need at least 5 to run the cycle. Message us to save your spot. Cycle starts Saturday, 10/10!
