Please follow the link below to learn more about a grateful friend of a patient of ours - who is doing a fundraiser to support us! Many of you who follow this a page have heard us tell this story previously, it’s a great one that clearly shows the importance of layperson CPR working together with a high quality EMS system, to save a patient suffering from cardiac arrest - TWICE! Please help Dean reach his goal - while supporting Shaler Hampton EMS!
Our crews had a great time at Shaler Township’s Trunk or Treat this past weekend! Special shout-out to head Witch/Paramedic Marrisa Wiesenbach and her assistant sorcerer EMT Amanda, who did an amazing job planning everything and pulling it off in stellar (and safe) fashion!!! Thanks to Shaler Township for the invite!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to each of you, from all of us! Today I am most thankful for each of our teams and our public safety partners who are working today to keep us all safe on Thanksgiving.
Thanks to all Vets, but especially to those who work or volunteer with Shaler Hampton EMS and all of our public safety partners.
There are few things more rewarding in EMS than when a patient stops by to say thanks! But when that patient was a cardiac arrest save, from more than 6 years ago, and they have stopped EVERY year since that, it’s a really great day! Ken Volle and his family chose today because Cindy Kolupajlo and Chastity Mastandrea were working and they were on his call 6 years ago. Other notables are Mr. Volle’s family who were acutely involved that day in starting CPR and calling 911..., then Lieutenant Sean Frank, who is now Chief of Police, and then a Medic with St. Margaret Response Team, but now a part time medic with us, Matt Lambert, and last but certainly not least is Shaler Villa Volunteer Fire Company who also assisted. Like is often the case - a great outcome is a total team effort! Thanks for visiting and thanks for the great lunch too!!!
Just dropped one of our 2 newer ambulances this week at LiquidSpring in Lafayette, Indiana. If you are not involved in EMS or have never ridden in an ambulance, you might be surprised to know that ambulances in general do not ride very smooth, as they are all built on truck chassis’. The first high quality and reliable solution to this problem to this issue is LiquidSpring (https://liquidspring.com/ems-ambulance-suspensions/). Besides the basic expectation that patients expe...ct a smooth ride, there are clinical implications for patients who might have sustained spinal injuries, other types of painful fractures, and the ability to more reliably provide ever higher quality of medical care without having to pull over due to a rough ride. It also improves the stability of the ride, which improves safety for our crews. This coming Friday our crews will take a second ambulance to LiquidSpring and bring the first one back and one week later they’ll both be back and in service. Lastly, in the Spring when our 2 new ambulances arrive, all 4 front line ambulances will be equipped with this new system. This is possible due to the support of Shaler Hampton EMS by those who subscribe and donate, the elected officials from Etna, Hampton, and Shaler who demand a high quality ambulance service and support us to make it so, and of course our dedicated Board of Directors who serve as volunteers and bring significant expertise from each of their professional backgrounds. Thank you to all of you!
Thank You to Katherine from Elmcroft of Allison Park who brought lunch from Boston Market for our crews today! As it always seems to go, lunch arrives and then we get busy. All crews are back at their stations and got to enjoy a great lunch, thanks to your kindness and thinking of us!
CONGRATS to Hampton Township VFD #1 for being PA’s latest licensed QRS agency! QRS or Quick Response Service work hand in hand with their local EMS agency to provide dual response to higher level calls or when requested by EMS with the common goal of providing excellent and timely patient care, no matter the circumstances. At Shaler Hampton EMS we are fortunate to work now with 3 different fire agencies in our 1st due area that provide QRS services, Elfinwild VFC, Etna ...VFD, and now Hampton VFD #1. In addition we work occasionally with Peebles VFC and West Deer VFD #3. Thanks to all the members of each of these all volunteer organizations for your continued support to your communities and Shaler Hampton EMS!
If there was ever a person deserving of this award, it is Dave Lindell! I am happy to describe him as a mentor, colleague, coworker and most importantly as a friend to me, Shaler Hampton EMS and virtually every EMS agency in the region. His impact on EMS, across the entire state of Pennsylvania cannot be overstated. From the first time that I heard him teach at St. Francis Hospital in probably 1981 until now, he has personally impacted me and thousands of others through e...ducation - but also by being the type of clinician that we should all strive to be. Through all of his professional accomplishments (which he will downplay), he is above all else a family man, with his talented and beautiful wife Kathy and his daughters Sarah and Kristen. Please join me in CONGRATS to Dave (who likely won't see this!) for this well deserved award!
2 Birthdays today at Shaler Hampton EMS! Happy 29th to Dirk and happy 19th to Chastity!!!
Today is a B I G day at Shaler Hampton EMS! A long serving and dedicated volunteer turned 65 today - and is still here to do his shift! George Dietz started volunteering here in 2002 and 18 years later still going strong. One of the nicest guys you ever wanted to meet - respected by all of us at SHEMS!... Happy Birthday George!!!

I fully realize that all things these days have become political, including COVID-19. But I can assure you that it's not political for our staff at Shaler Hampton EMS. We have been treating patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 since the start of the Pandemic and more recently in increasing numbers. There has also been considerable talk lately about recent data released by the CDC that some are misinterpreting or spinning to mean that the Pandemic has been overblown... or to argue against masking. The attached graphic compares various rates of H1N1 vs Seasonal Flu, vs COVID-19 - and illustrates the very deadly nature of this virus on a national, state, and county level - the data clearly shows that although there are 3,000 less COVID-19 cases than last years seasonal flu, there were nearly 5 times as many hospitalizations and more than TWENTY times as many deaths. Please wear a mask - not for you, but for everyone around you! Sincerely, Eric Schmidt, Chief Shaler Hampton EMS
An exciting day today as Shaler Hampton’s newest Paramedic, Marissa Wiesenbach, achieved full command status! Receiving her drug box key from Supervisor Cindy Kolupajlo, marks a significant milestone for Marissa as the nearly 2 year path to becoming a Paramedic is complete. Marissa started as a volunteer EMT and then moved to a part time EMT position. Marissa is a Shaler High School grad and is continuing her studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Congrats Marissa!!!!
Are you a Paramedic that LOVES night shift? If you are then let's talk! Current Part-Time opportunity that could lead to Full Time at Shaler Hampton EMS. Shifts would be at either of our stations and are available most nights of the week. Please download our Team Application that's available on our website - Look forward to hearing from you!... http://www.shalerhamptonems.org/join-our-team/
This is a tale of caution for all public safety providers. When the "routine" is not routine - and all of a sudden you're staring at the wrong end of a gun. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending, but also many learning points along the way. Let's be careful out there!... - Sgt. Phil Esterhaus See more
With all the bad news going on in the world - how about some positive news and support from a great friend of Shaler Hampton EMS? Thank you for thinking of us Carl Funtal, owner of Cop Out Pierogies with a donation of $600 for our Crew Fund to benefit our hard working staff!!! If you’ve not been, you’ve gotta go, his Pierogies are the best and one of many great reasons for a trip to Etna! ... Thanks Again Carl!!!
