It’s National Paranormal Day! What better way to celebrate than to read about the odd, the unusual, and the downright weird.

Today’s coffee: Starbucks Sumatra in my Pennwriters mug. It’s National Grammar Day. I’ve already mentioned my affection for reference books in previous posts. T...hese are some grammar and usage favorites: Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage; Warriner’s English Grammer and Composition; and of course, my favorite, The Elements Of Style (illustrated). All of these get a fair amount of use, but I review The Elements Of Style at least once a year. I have a second, older copy of the Strunk and White classic text that’s been a staple of mine since high school. Handwriting Day as a reminder that almost all writing starts with a pen or pencil forming words on a piece of paper. Whether or not it’s legible to others is not always relevant, particularly in the early stages of the work. What you see here are some of the handwritten notes for my current work-in-process, Flood Risk, back when I first started writing it. Above my notebook are two books that I use as jumping off points when I lack momentum, Pen On Fire by Barbara DeMarco-Barrett and Just Write One Thing Today by John Gillard. Very motivating.
