Most people know gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by its most common symptom - heartburn. GERD occurs when the muscle that connects the esophagus to the stomach opens to allow irritating stomach fluids surge up into the esophagus, sometimes causing inflammation and the painful burning sensation behind the breastbone known as heartburn. Researches have identified lifestyle factors that reduce risk of developing GERD. Those are: normal body weight (body mass index between... 18.5 and 25), never smoking, moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily, no more than two cups of coffee/tea/soda daily, a healthy diet (comparatively higher intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, poultry, and fish). If you’ve developed GERD, those same lifestyle modifications are important when it comes to managing gastroesophageal reflux disease.
