Picture for attention only. Today is the first day of Rifle season for deer this year. Trail riders, do not leave the property today, tomorrow or Monday. Many hunters are out this morning. If you do ride on the property, be alert that Wayne is walking around. He already found a gut pile on the property from yesterday or the day before from someone illegally hunting on the property (out of season and without permission).

You’ve probably seen your vet or farrier check for digital pulse or Kathy will do this when a horse is a bit off coming in from the pasture. Next time you’re out to visit your horse, try this so you know what normal should feel like. There are a number of reasons why a digital pulse might be elevated but the chart in this short article helps guide you on when a veterinarian should be consulted or when you just need to alert the barn staff to help keep an eye on your equine partner to watch for change in pulse or behavior. Plus, this article teaches you a little more about the amazing anatomy that allows your horse to do what it does so well!

GAIG Championships Recap: I cannot begin to say how proud I am of all of the horses and riders! There was lots of chaos, intense warm-up arenas, crazy weather,... and loose horses trying to come into our show arena, BUT they all rose to the occasion with grace and elegance. I took 6 horses to compete in the show and for many of them this was the biggest show they have competed at. The horses that have been with me for awhile acted like they owned the show, which was amazing because they used to have horrible show nerves. Some of the newer partnerships were a little overwhelmed in the beginning of the show, but they grew in confidence and gained more and more relaxation as the show went on. I am honored for their their continued trust in me and grateful for the opportunity to let all of these incredible horses shine. I have to give a couple of very special shout outs: Reyna killed her 2nd Level Freestyle Championship class with a 73.98%. She not only WON the Championship, but she won by 5%! I'm not going to lie, I may have shed a few tears of joy when I heard our score. I love dancing with this fierce girl! Ray was 8th in a very large 3rd Level Freestyle Championship class and 10th in a huge 3rd Level Championship class. She was so proud of herself when she got to do her victory gallop! I always knew she had greatness in her and I am so blessed to have the opportunity to help her realize that! Doc took in the crazy show environment with great maturity. He consistently scored in the high 60s throughout the entire show. I am so impressed with how much he has grown in such a short amount of time. Looking forward to rocking it next season! Iris overcame a lot of obstacles at this show! She had a ton of curveballs thrown at her, including a loose horse trying to enter our show ring as we began our test. I am grateful for her trust in me and allowing me to help and guide her through it. She is such a special mare with a huge heart and she handled everything so well. This incredibly talented girl has a very bright future ahead and I am so excited to be a part of her journey to greatness! Olivia and her mare Zoey had a very productive horse show as well. They were thrown a ton of curveballs and handled it like pros. Olivia's grace and positivity is one of the qualities I value the most. She and her mare have a beautiful partnership that everyone can see. Makes my heart happy. Emma and her big guy Freighter attacked their 3rd Level test with huge power, earning their last scores for the Bronze Medal! I am beyond proud of these two and happy to see all of the hard work paying off. 4th Level here they come! Thank you to all of owners, my Art of Riding team, my family, my better half, and my biggest cheerleader for all of your help and support. Thank you to my amazing sponsors for your belief in me and for helping keep our horses happy, healthy, and shiny! Today, the Allegheny County Police officially retired another one of our police horses named King. King is a thoroughbred who was bred to race, but was used as ...a hunter-jumper. He was donated to the Allegheny County Police Department from a farm in Westmoreland County. During his career with the ACPD, King participated in the G20 Summit, the Superbowl parade, the Stanley Cup parade, as well as numerous other parades, displays, details and community events. His last assignment was this year's Pittsburgh Penguins detail. King will enjoy his retirement at Round Hill Park in Allegheny County alongside Dollar, Armbro and Dickerson who are also retired Allegheny County Police horses. King was escorted to Round Hill park by ACPD Sgt. Wes McClellan and Senior Patrol Officer Chris Swanson who are part of the Mounted Unit. King is seen below saying hi to his old friend Dickerson as well as being led off of the trailer by S.P.O. Swanson. This was also a special moment for King and his former partner Allegheny County Police Detective Nicole DePaoli. Det. Depaoli is pictured below on King during past details. She stopped by Round Hill Park to wish King well on his retirement. The Allegheny County Police are proud of our mounted unit which has a long and historic tradition of great riders and outstanding horses. Please join us in thanking King for a great career and job well done.

I will never be able to describe the power of time spent cleaning stalls. During this time I have made some of the biggest decisions in my life. I have silentl...y thought my way, step by step, through some of the biggest disasters of my life. I have ugly cried my way through heartbreak all while cleaning stalls. I’ve thrown bags of sawdust in range as I thought about all of the shitty things going on in my life. Each stall has oddly given me a place of comfort as I stood, fork in hand, feeling empty during the times I’ve felt so alone. It has taught me to appreciate the serenity of the quiet. Realizing the ones in my life I can count on and the numerous fake people who are only present when convenient for themselves. I’ve enjoyed a free gym membership, as I’ve sculpted my back and shoulders into he man, just sifting away. I’ve stumbled my way, dry heaving, with sunglasses ....cleaning stalls through last night’s hangover, because god forbid my best friend be forced to stand in a dirty stall. Today I spend my morning, cleaning stalls and processing my life. I’m mentally making life changing decisions, as I write this post, knowing that whatever I decide, it will be the right one, as it was made in a stall. I understand that there are those who think us horse people should get real jobs. And that all we do is spend our days playing around. I’m genuinely sorry that you have never been exposed to a lifestyle that teaches you discipline, how to love unconditionally, put something other then yourself first, bust your ass for the things you want and need, kept humble by a 1200 lb animal, the real meaning of hard work, early mornings and late nights spent caring for something other than YOU. Those are things a real job will never give you. Some of you haven’t cleaned stalls .....and it shows.

Colonel John Russell passed away at his home in Texas at noon today. America's oldest living Olympic medalist was aged 100 years 7 months and 28 days. A decor...ated WWII combat soldier serving General George Patton's staff. He was a coach and mentor to thousands of athletes over 80 years. A true legend, we have lost a great one. For the folks coming to the stables from the Greensburg direction, the Salina bridge will be closed for most of October for repairs and safety modifications. You should be able to stay on 819 from Saltsburg all the way to Apollo and then up 56 to Edmon Road. No squirrely backroads but it will add a few minutes to your drive.

Some things new clients have said to me, "My last farrier didn't shape on a shoe as much as you do." "My last farrier said the shoes fit right out of the box."... "My last farrier said he's never driven a hot nail." Without telling you what I think of these comments, I'll just leave this picture of a healthy foot here and you can decide how much wiggle room your farrier has when nailing, especially if you have a poor footed horse. This is a science and an art. Photo credit: Rob Sigafoos

We at RREC take care of several of these points (2, 3, 4, & 7). Responsibility for the rest are yours as the owner/rider with the assistance of your Farrier. Take care of your Equine partner!

Ways to become your farrier's favorite client: 1. Make our work space enjoyable. While many of us will put up with working on feet in paddocks, grass, dirt, o...r even (ugh!) mud, we prefer a clean, dry space with shade/cover. Dirt and moisture can ruin our tools, heat without shade can be incredibly hard to work in, and grass or deep footing can block our view of the hoof and the horse's actual movement. We love having a spot where we can work without worrying about dirty or wet feet and tools. 2. Make sure your horse stands well to be worked on. Almost all horses can stand long enough for a quick hoof pick, but some really struggle with the idea of holding up their feet for longer periods of time. One frustrated or unruly horse can end our career (or worse!) and many of us don't want to risk it. Even if your horse isn't dangerous, practice with them on being patient as someone works on their feet, because fighting a horse of any size makes our job that much more difficult and our muscles that much more sore. We always love seeing those horses that think it's no big deal to offer their foot and wait patiently for us to be finished! 3. Keep a schedule on a good cycle length. Cancelling on us last minute can throw off our entire route and our day, not to mention risk your horse's feet becoming overly long or imbalanced. A hoof should never "look due," if they look due they're overdue typically! If we suggest a certain cycle length for your horse, make it a point to keep that for the best hoof health for your horse. 4. Keep up to date on invoices. We as professionals can have a lot of overheard in our business, between everything from gas/travel costs, insurance, tools, inventory (hoof boots, shoes, epoxies, glues, etc), and even continuing education. After all is said and done, sometimes a simple trim can average $20 in costs to us as professionals if dividing all our basic expenses (without even applying anything to the hoof) between the amount of horses we see! We do rely on client payments to replace what is needed for our business, and to pay our bills and ourselves. 5. Trust us. First of all- you should only be working with a hoofcare provider you trust. If you don't trust your hoofcare provider, find someone you CAN trust! I want to start by saying that, of course, we want you to feel free to dialogue with us about what you are seeing in terms of hoof health and soundness, and always want to hear your concerns (you are your horse's advocate, after all!). That being said, if you trust us, then trust that we have the best interests at heart for your horses. A lot of us put a lot of time into continual study, and might have experiences of successes or failures which could be similar to your situation. Ideally we can explain why we might be doing something that we are hoping will help, or NOT doing something that could be harmful. We often have a reason for our decisions, just ask! Professionals- what are other things you appreciate from your clients?

Here’s some great information on Pre-Purchase Exams from our friends at Allegheny Equine! It’s nearly impossible to find a perfect horse. It’s not hard to find an absolutely awesome horse that just needs its teeth floated regularly or a 2 wedge pad on its right front hoof (yes I’m talking about the OTTBs out there) which your Farrier can easily maintain once they know about it. Maybe the horse/pony is a little overweight or underweight which can be addressed with the nutr...ition program at its new barn. Perhaps the seller let you know about a specific problem and priced the horse accordingly. The PPE can help verify the extent of the problem and the veterinarian can advise you on a treatment regimen to manage it in a safe, cost effective manner. The PPE doesn’t guarantee anything but it certainly helps you make a better informed decision. See more
