Many people express skepticism about whether it is really possible to curb corruption in countries with strong entrenched interests that thrive on it. Corruption fighters usually respond that it comes down to "political will" and public support. In the corruption book we are writing, we are collecting examples of how it is being done, such as in Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Guatemala, and Brazil (Petrobas). The most recent example is summarized in the October 15, 2016 edition of the Economist, http://www.economist.com//21708735-new-law-aims-curb-gifts. Korea is cracking down on age old practices of gift giving to government officials after the 2014 ferry collapse that killed 250 high school students, and has been blamed on cozy ties between businessmen and bureaucrats.

At RGI, we usually focus on the weightier issues regarding corruption, money laundering and terrorism. Corruption is at the root of many of the evils afflicting the planet from the extinction of the Sumatran tiger to the deaths of thousands in Syria. Our work is serious.
