MEASLES OUTBREAK REACHING RECORD HIGH The Centers for Disease Control has reported 90 new measles cases, this week, with this being the third consecutive week of reportable new cases. This brings the year’s total to 555 cases, the second largest number of reported cases since 2000. The largest number of cases has been reported in New York City, 329 cases reported as of Monday, and nearly all of them in Brooklyn. New York City officials have hence declared a public health e...mergency and mandatory measles immunization has been ordered. Measles is a very contagious acute viral disease. Before the onset of the rash, it is characterized by high fever, cough, weakness and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Before the skin rash, the diagnostic presentation is red spots in the mouth, known as Koplik’s spots. This is followed 1-2 days later by a skin rash that may be red and blotchy to small papules (maculopapular rash). Measles complications are most likely to occur in children under the age of 5 and adults over 20 years of age. The more common complications include ear infections which may result in permanent hearing loss, and diarrhea. The most serious and fatal complications are encephalitis (swelling and inflammation of the brain) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs). Active immunization is necessary to prevent an epidemic.
