At PNF we like to start each workout with a few minutes of foam rolling before warming up because we have found it improves the following: It gives provides a better warm-up than if we skip it. It allows for more range of motion in movements. It decreases sensitivity in high-sensitive tissues by taking the breaks off and allowing for better movement.... Clients feel "looser" after doing it. There are more areas that can be rolled out, but these are the ones we like to start with. The difference between working out when you’re in your 20s and in your 40s is that you can’t be stupid. When you’re young you can get away with bad form, movements that jerk and yank the joints in bad ways, high volume, and lifting more than you can handle. But as you get older your body doesn’t recover as fast from this stuff and is much more likely to get injured in the process. This doesn’t mean that you cannot workout hard, but you do have to workout smarter. ... Tips to training hard and smart with age. Less variety for varieties sake and more focus on what is truly effective. 45-50 minutes is all that’s needed to get in a good workout. 4-6 exercises per workout is perfect. 6-12 controlled reps feel and work best most of the time. Form is everything. 4-week progressive programs beat the workout of the day method. A rest week every 12-16 weeks goes a long way to keeping your body feeling good, fresh, and injury-free. You need to move every day, but this doesn’t mean with weights or in the gym. Every rep has to count, so that total volume can be decreased. Rest periods between sets are effective (they always have been by the way). Running around from exercise to exercise with no break, isn’t lifting. It’s cardio with weights. The warm-up isn’t optional. Explosiveness needs trained. The more you can do standing vs sitting the better. There isn’t such a thing as a bad exercise. Just exercises that may not be appropriate for where you are right now.
