As we prepare our hearts for Christ the Savior this Advent, how fitting is it that we begin Month 4 of the Bible Novena with these books! Judith, Esther, and 1 and 2 Maccabees all show how God delivers Israel from evil. And in a special way, the Book of Judith powerfully prefigures the Virgin Mary, who St. Jerome called, "the new Judith." The Old Testament prepares us for the coming of Jesus Christ, who completely delivers us and fulfills all of salvation history. We invite y...ou to reflect with us on these books of the Bible to help prepare for this great gift. #SpeakLord #BibleNovena #Advent #Vocations Archdiocese of Philadelphia St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Archdiocese of Philadelphia New Evangelization Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools - AOPS CatholicPhilly.com Office for Catechetical Formation of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia - Ministerio Hispano Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Black Catholics www.heedthecall.org/BibleNovena

King Hezekiah did what was right in the Lord’s sight, just as his father David had done (2 Kings 18:3). There is no one else before or after Hezekiah who was able to follow the Lord as well as David. Just 25 years old at the start of his reign, Hezekiah has a lot to teach us. Sarah Christmyer offers an enriching reflection on Hezekiah, whose story is found in 2 Kings 18-19. Christmyer is a Catholic speaker and adjunct professor at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. We invite y...ou to re-read Hezekiah’s story, and to prayerfully ponder these reflection questions: 1. After the idolatry brought into Judea by King Ahaz, King Hezekiah brings about religious reform. He keeps the commandments and God is with him. We are all affected by sin because of original sin. What reforms can we make in our own lives to root out sin and crown Jesus as the King of our hearts? 2. King Hezekiah came up against seemingly impossible odds, but he didn’t attack or give up. He laid his problems out before the Lord and he prayed. There may be times in our lives when we come up against impossible odds. What will you do? Will you look for a worldy solution like Ahaz did, or will you lay your problem out before the Lord? 3. King Hezekiah asks the prophet Isaiah to intercede for him. Holy men and women on Earth and countless holy angels and saints in Heaven are waiting for us to ask for their intercession. How can you ask for their intercession this week? #SpeakLord #BibleNovena #Vocations Archdiocese of Philadelphia St Charles Borromeo Archdiocese of Philadelphia New Evangelization Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools - AOPS CatholicPhilly.com Office for Catechetical Formation of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia - Ministerio Hispano Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Black Catholics

Throughout salvation history, God establishes leaders to represent Him and to carry out His word and will among His people. The leadership exemplified in the Book of Joshua is passed down throughout the ages, and in a special way through the sacramental priesthood. Find out how in today’s reflection video with Fr. Dennis Gill, the Director of the Office for Worship for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and the Rector and Pastor of the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.... Consider prayerfully pondering these reflection questions with us: 1) How does Christ call us to be leaders in our daily lives? 2) What are some qualities/virtues of a good Catholic Christian leader? 3) How can we strengthen these qualities and virtues in ourselves? 4) Fr. Gill explains how priests participate in the leadership of Christ in a particular way. What are some of these ways, and how have you seen this lived through priests in your life? #SpeakLord #BibleNovena #Vocations Archdiocese of Philadelphia St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Archdiocese of Philadelphia New Evangelization Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools - AOPS CatholicPhilly.com Office for Catechetical Formation of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia - Ministerio Hispano Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Black Catholics Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul

Today we release the Book of Ruth and the First and Second Books of Samuel. In Ruth, we see God's inclusive love for all people. As a non-Israelite woman who comes to know and love God, she is the great-grandmother of David and included in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:5). As such, she participates in God's plan for salvation for Jews and Gentiles alike. Throughout these readings, we continue to hear of God's sovereignty and faithfulness towards His chosen people, e...ven when they fail. We see the establishment of the Kings and the promise of a new Messiah. Samuel plays an important role in the transition from tribal life to the monarchy. He anoints the first two Israelite kings and serves as a priest, judge and prophet. Listen to minute 12 of the First Book of Samuel video to hear this year's theme proclaimed, "Speak Lord, for your servant is listening" (1 Samuel 3:9). #SpeakLord #BibleNovena #Vocations Archdiocese of Philadelphia St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Archdiocese of Philadelphia New Evangelization Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools - AOPS CatholicPhilly.com Office for Catechetical Formation of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia - Ministerio Hispano Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Black Catholics

"...I command you: be firm and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9, NAB In the first chapter of Joshua, we witness a conversation between God and Joshua as Joshua begins the conquest of the land promised to Abraham and again to Moses. God affirms Joshua and his mission and promises He will always be with him. This is reminiscent of the call of Moses (Ex 3:10, 12) and foreshadowing the call of Gideon (Judg...es 3:16). As God calls his people, He affirms the person and their mission and promises that He is with them. In that moment that God was calling Joshua, Joshua may not have known how he was going to claim the land, but he knew his mission from God and knew God was with him wherever he went. He had the courage to follow God's plan for him. He had the courage for whatever came in life - whatever came with his mission. Today, as we celebrate the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila, let us have courage for whatever comes in life. The Shema is the most important prayer in Jewish tradition, and is most likely the first words Jesus prayed as a child. It's composed of Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Deuteronomy 11:13-21, and Numbers 15:37-41. This prayer points to the proper posture of a believer before the Lord: one of listening. Ultimately, the Shema is fulfilled by Jesus at His transfiguration. List to Fr. Giuffre explain how in today’s reflection video. Fr. Giuffre is the Chair of the Department of Sacred Scriptu...re at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. We invite you to prayerfully ponder these reflection questions: 1) In Hebrew, shema means hear or listen. Do I make time to hear God’s voice? 2)What sorts of things compete for my attention? Do they lead me closer to or farther away from God? 3)How can I make time this week to intentionally listen to God’s voice? #SpeakLord #BibleNovena #Vocations Archdiocese of Philadelphia St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Archdiocese of Philadelphia New Evangelization Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools - AOPS CatholicPhilly.com Office for Catechetical Formation of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia - Ministerio Hispano Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Black Catholics

God has established a covenant with us, and we can learn alot about this from God's covenant with the Israelites in the Book of Deuteronomy. Oftentimes we want to be in control of our lives, but our lives have been created by a good God who loves us. When we give our lives as a gift back to Him, amazing things happen. Consider prayerfully pondering these reflection questions: 1) What is a time in your life you've been docile to the Holy Spirit? How did God work in your life ...during that time? 2) Are there areas in your relationship with God that you are trying to control? How might God be asking you to trust Him there? 3) What steps can you take to surrender those areas to God? "There is no better novena than this: O Jesus, I abandon myself to you. Jesus, you take over." -The words of Jesus to Servant of God Fr. The key to all of it is trust. We hear these words from Father Stephen DeLacy two days after the feast of St. Faustina Kowalska, to whom Jesus privately gave the signature, Jesus, I trust in You. In Numbers 13-14, the Israelites doubt God’s ability to lead them into the promise land, and God allows them to wander in the wilderness for forty years in order to form them in trust. As we discern God’s will for our lives, He gives us periods of wandering in the wilderness ...to powerfully bestow His grace and to form us in trust. We invite you to prayerfully ponder these reflection questions: 1) During extended periods of discernment in your life, how was God inviting you to trust Him and how was He forming you? 2) How is Jesus inviting you to trust Him? What graces is He giving you right now? 3) Ask God, What is the purpose you’ve made me for? #SpeakLord #BibleNovena #Vocations Archdiocese of Philadelphia St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Archdiocese of Philadelphia New Evangelization CatholicPhilly.com Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools - AOPS Office for Catechetical Formation of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Black Catholics Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia - Ministerio Hispano
