This morning I awoke early, after going to bed latefrom a nightmare. I lost Pearl. And then I couldn't even remember what she looked like. I'd retrace my steps, I thought, but better yetI'll wake up. So I did, and there she was, a little white and brown circle beside me. I got up and wrote about my dream, then went outside to pull stilt grass and mile-a-minute and replace them with Golden Groundsel seed and rasberries, or was it blackberries? The sky spits, repla...cing the sweat of my nightmare with it's cool mist. Happy to find this poem this morning after yesterday’s adventures. On Meditating, Sort of by Mary Oliver Meditation, so I've heard, is best accomplished if you entertain a certain strict posture. Frankly, I prefer just to lounge under a tree. So why should I think I could ever be successful? Some days I fall asleep, or land in that even better place half asleep where the world, spring, summer, autumn, winter flies through my mind in its hardy ascent and its uncompromising descent. So I just lie like that, while distance and time reveal their true attitudes: they never heard of me, and never will, or ever need to. Of course I wake up finally thinking, how wonderful to be who I am, made out of earth and water, my own thoughts, my own fingerprints all that glorious, temporary stuff. See more

Journal excerpts 27 May 2021 Yesterday, following a thunderstorm, I set out with Pearl to find some more of the elusive Brood X Cicadas in a neglected wood. As we followed the pulsing serenade, we spied some carnelian-eyed, winged-wonders fluttering overhead and perched in a bush. I sat and sketched whilst Pearl tugged, her curiosity always a match for mine. 28 May 2021 Today, as I struggled to write this newsletter, I unexpectedly rediscovered the three plants that we chose as optional covers for our Carson Journals! I set out determined to pull the Fleabane along the path from house to studio as it had grown nearly as tall as I am. What began as an experiment, became a daunting causeway for questing ticks. But in the overgrown mess, I found my treasured Wood’s Poppy, Golden Groundsel, the remains of Lily of the Valley, and other wonders including shed snakeskins (Pearl’s findings!) alive but flowerless. My word for 2020 was Lightness. There is humour in thisnow that we are in 2021and I cannot say the word was all wrong. There was an intentional seeking and appreciating of the little things all last year that I am grateful for. Though my year ended with an immense weight, I am still navigating my understanding of it, and hang on (lightly) to Lightnessand find myself longing for more of it.
