"My great grandfather started farming in Virginia in the early 1900s. My grandfather and father were raised in farming, but they sold the farm before I was born. The stories of the farm always interested me. My father is a fur trapper, catching all different kinds of animals for damage control. I got to help him, and I enjoyed seeing all the different farming operations we trapped on. I love working with God’s creation. I’m not behind a desk. I get to do something different,... outside every day. I’ve loved animals since I was a little kid. My passion really started my freshmen year at Delaware Valley University when I started working in the dairy barn. That was my first real farm experience. From there on, this was definitely what I want to do. I want people to know it’s normal and OK to be Black and get into this field. I haven’t met a lot of people in agriculture who look like me. I had an internship in Florida last semester at a large cattle ranch where I met another African American who was a day worker. That was the first time in my life that I met somebody who looked just like me and was doing a job I want to do. I think it is important to have mentors that look like you and went through the same obstacles as you, because you can relate to them on a certain level. Agriculture is for anybody. Don’t let anything stop you. You’ve got to be a go getter and not sit back. If you work hard, show your interest and your passion, they shouldn’t have a problem with you. It’s all about having that ambition and being determined." Darian Poles, agriculture student at Delaware Valley University

The next time you’re enjoying a steaming stack of golden pancakes, think about where your maple syrup came from! Corrie Bacon, owner and operator of Butler Hill Maple Farm, located in Tioga County, grew up helping his dad make maple syrup on family land. After completing 31 years serving of our nation and retiring as a Warrant Officer, Corrie lent a hand to a lifelong friend tapping and processing. Corrie and his wife Kimberly, who is still serving in the Active Reserves,... own 39 acres and lease adjacent property with an additional 200 maple trees, and tap another 200 on Corrie’s 79-year-old father’s land. In total, Corrie manages 7 miles of tubing and 1500 taps. For Corrie and many veterans whose second careers are in agriculture, it’s not about the money as much as the perk of being outside among nature. I love working in the woods, among the wildlife, said Bacon. It’s all driven by Mother Nature. www.butlerhillmaplefarm.com

Pennsylvania Farm Show 19.10.2020

There are times in the life of a farmer when the risks are too great or uncertain, requiring farmers to make the tough decision to leave a field fallow. To protect our assets both our people and our resources from incalculable losses, we have made the tough decision to take a year to lie fallow. Rather than an in-person Farm Show, we will celebrate Pennsylvania agriculture virtually for 2021 as we prepare for a productive future. We’ll look at our strengths and where we ...need to invest together in order to grow. We’ll consider what has become crystal clear during the pandemic that agriculture is essential for life, and our people are resilient and innovative. We will focus on agricultural awareness, education, and literacy while highlighting the interconnectedness of our food chain. Bringing to light that agriculture is virtually everywhere. We’ll tell this story through technology as we envision and cultivate a prosperous, thriving future together. Virtual events will be focused on education and awareness for both the general public and the agriculture industry. Any competitive ag events that are held virtually will not require the purchase of an animal. Details of a virtual Farm Show will be announced as they unfold over the coming months. Let’s cultivate tomorrow, together. #PAFS21 #CultivatingTomorrow
