February is American Heart month! Did you know that every 40 seconds a person dies of a heart attack in the United States? The 3 biggest risk factors for getting heart disease is smoking, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. There are many things you can do to decrease your risk of getting heart disease but two of the most important is eating a heart healthy diet and exercising. According to the American Heart Association, it's recommended that a person performs m...oderate exercise for 150 minutes per week and eats a diet that consists of the follow: variety of fruits and veggies whole grain foods Lean and unprocessed sources of proteins (nuts, fish, legumes) Low-fat or nonfat dairy Liquid non-tropical vegetable oil minimally processed foods minimized intake of added sugars foods prepared with minimal-no salt limited alcohol intake It's never too late to eat well and get moving. It's a lifestyle you won't regret and your heart/body will thank you for it! See more

DO YOU PRACTICE GOOD SLEEP POSTURE? A good night's sleep is necessary to allow our body and brain to recharge and recover. One key part of getting a good night's sleep and waking up refreshed is your sleep posture. Check out Derek, one of our awesome physical therapy assistants, in the pictures below for ways you can enhance your body's posture using pillows around the head and legs.

The video below is from an evaluation of a patient suffering from right sided BPPV. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo. BPPV occurs when calcium carbonate crystals, called otoconia, become displaced in the inner ear and disrupt normal function. When the otoconia are displaced the inner ear sends improper signals to the brain when movement occurs. This causes vertigo or a sense of spinning. Symptoms of BPPV usually begin with... a sudden onset of severe vertigo, dizziness, nausea/vomiting and imbalance. Over time the symptoms become position based. This means that symptoms occur when lying down, rolling over, sitting up, bending or looking up. BPPV is treatable! An evaluation by a vestibular therapist can determine the ear and canals involved. A series of repositioning maneuvers are then performed to relocate the otoconia and stop the symptoms. Other exercises are also performed as needed to improve the balance. Call today if you have been suffering with vertigo. Help is available.
We would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year! We hope this year brings you a wealth of health and happiness
What is Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is irritation and inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a thick fibrous band of tissue that spans from your heel to the ball of the foot. It acts as a bowstring that absorbs shock and forces placed through the leg. The most common symptoms are immediate foot pain when getting out of bed in the morning, heel/foot pain that worsens with prolonged standing or walking, pain when standing up from a chair after sitting for prolo...nged periods of time, and stiffness or tenderness to the ankle/foot. The cause occurs from repetitive strain placed on the tissue, typically with excessive walking, running, or jumping. Risk factors for getting plantar fasciitis include having flat feet, having too high of a foot arch, obesity, tight calf muscles, exercising after a period of inactivity, and having abnormal foot mechanics. 90% of people find resolution of symptoms with conservative treatment that may include steroid injections, shoe orthotics, and physical therapy. Surgery is indicated if all conservative approaches fail. If you or someone you know is suffering from plantar fasciitis pain, please call one of our OSPTA offices today to set up an appt with one of our physical therapists! See more

What is a Hip labral tear? The labrum of the hip is a ring of cartilage that lines the outer rim of the hip joint socket. It helps to cushion and provide stability to the hip joint. The labrum can tear during traumatic injuries such as falling or during a car accident or with repetitive torsional movements such as when playing golf, hockey, gymnastics, or soccer. Underlying structural abnormalities of the hip causing impingement syndrome or those with osteoarthritis have an i...ncreased risk of labral tears. Symptoms of a labral tear may include the following: Deep, achy pain in hip or groin A locking, clicking or catching sensation in your hip joint Decreased hip mobility/movement Pain with walking and/or running Pain with high impact exercises Sharp pain with squatting activities Physical therapy can help restore motion, strength, and balance which will take stress off the hip joint thus reducing pain. This often times is supplemented with taking an anti-inflammatory drug prescribed by your doctor. If all conservative measures fail, then surgery may be indicated.
TFCC Injury TFCC stands for the triangular fibrocartilage complex. It is a small piece of cartilage that is located below the pinky in the wrist. It’s purpose is to cushion the small carpal bones in the wrist and support the forearm bones, the ulna and radius, when you rotate your hand or use your fingers. The most common causes of TFCC tears are from wear over time or an injury such as a fall or fracture in the wrist. Some people also have an ulna that is longer than th...eir radius, and this causes the TFCC to be much thinner and tear more easily. TFCC tears usually cause pain on the pinky side of the wrist especially during movement, clicking during movement, and limited motion of the wrist. They are diagnosed by an MRI and a hand surgeon can do an examination to determine if surgery or conservative treatment is the best course of action. Hand therapists treat all types of TFCC repairs, including surgical and nonsurgical. Conservative treatment typically involves wearing a splint, taping, and learning how to adapt activities to make them less painful. They can help to reduce your pain symptoms and make wrist movement easier! #handtherapy #handtherapist #tfcc #occupationaltherapy #wrist
