REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR SERMON: "PUTTING SOME WINDS IN YOUR SAILS!", Sunday, May 23, 2021, Pastor Heidi Silliman 1) Scripture readings: Acts 2: 1-21 and Romans 8: 22-27 2) If you had to describe your spiritual life currently using "weather" words, what words would you choose? Sunny and bright? Cloudy and overcast? Rainy? Turbulent and stormy? Other words?... 3) Pentecost is a day we observe and celebrate; it is the birthday of the Christian Church. How might we "fan the flame" of our spiritual lives and passions to serve Christ in our church and in our community? Reflect upon where God might be speaking to your soul to become active and engaged for His work. 4) Rev. Jim Cymbala of Brooklyn Tabernacle Church writes in his book, "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire": "Whatever we call ourselves, we all have to face our lack of real power and call out for a fresh infilling of the Spirit. We need the fresh wind of God to awaken us from our lethargy. When we sincerely turn to God, we will find that his church always moves forward, not backward." What is the balance needed for churches to do what they "want/desire" when they gather AND offering new programs of Outreach for those not yet present in the faith community? 5) How can we be a church "on the move"? How can we be open to the Spirit's power and movement, as fresh winds blowing in our sails? Ask yourself: Am I truly open to change and movement of God's Spirit in my personal life and community life in my church?

HOPE: AN ADVENT JOURNEY---REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR THE THIRD WEEK OF ADVENT,DECEMBER 13TH, from Rev. Olu Brown's book and following up our sermon yesterday, " LOOK FORWARD! : Do Not Be Afraid!"--- 1) Have you ever see an angel? If so, what did the angel look like? Did the angel say anything or was the angel present only? (My question: Who might be angels in your life right now or in your past? How have these angels helped you?) 2) Like Gideon, Zachariah and Mary, have you ...ever experienced an "with all due respect" moment with God, because what God was sharing with you was greater than your imagination could dream? 3) Have you ever settled for what you could see on the surface? What would it look like to explore more and trust that God will have your back? 4) What are you curious about in this season of your life and do you feel this may be one of those God moments? 5) In addition to Isaiah 9:6, are there other Old Testament scriptures that referred to Jesus birth? How have you seen those scriptures fulfilled? And from Rev. Olu Brown's book, p. 65, the following summary of his points on verses 10 & 11 from Luke 2: *Don't be afraid! Look! ( AFFIRMATION) * I bring good news to you---wonderful, joyous news for all people. (CONFIRMATION) * Your Savior is born today in David's city. (SALVATION) * He is Christ the Lord. (CONTINUITY) And also for your consideration: "Braving the Wilderness" by Brene Brown An excellent book! She says: "Curiosity is an act of vulnerability and courage...We need to be brave enough to want to know more.(From her other book "Rising Strong", New York, Random House, 2015), p. 53 Rev. Olu Brown writes of Brene Brown: "Brown's encouragement to modern day shepherds is to overcome fear and become confident in existing in the unknown and avoid getting stuck in the past or present. To be curious means we are called to " surrender to uncertainty." (the same source as above, and p. 82 of Olu Brown book) Based on Rev. Olu Brown's concept "God can meet us anywhere!", yesterday at St. Andrew as we gathered outside in front of our church to view our Outdoor Nativity drama, we learned that God can meet us at any place, anytime and anywhere----even in our church parking lot! Blessings as you reflect on all these questions, quotes, and insights, Peace, Pastor Heidi Silliman

HOPE: AN ADVENT JOURNEY, Reflection Questions from Rev. Olu Brown's book as we seek to reflect upon our Sermon: "LOOK IN! Special Delivery!" from our Second Sunday in Advent, on Dec. 6th. 1) Like Jesus, have you ever felt like or been treated like an outsider? What was the experience and how did it make you feel? 2) Is there a time when you forgave yourself or someone else and it created a new wholeness within? How did it feel? Was it difficult to arrive at this moment in ...your life? 3) What does hope look like to you and how do you know when you have it? 4) What is your definition and example of grace? Have you ever taken grace for granted? 5) Have you ever underestimated someone because of their circumstance, family of origin or economic status? Did you discover you were wrong in passing judgment on them? How did this change the way you saw them as a person? And from our final illustration from the Christmas Carol, "O Little Town of Bethlehem" on Sunday, pray this last verse of the Carol as a way of inviting Christ into your heart, into your home, into your life this Advent Season: "O Holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us, we pray, Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born to us today. We hear the Christmas angels, The great glad tiding tell, O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel!" (written by Phillips Brooks, an Episcopal priest in 1868 while serving a church in Philadelphia.) Peace in Christ, Pastor Heidi Silliman
