Did know that Millersville University's library is home to some rare and unique books? Here are the two oldest from our collection. The oldest rare book in Archives & Special Collections is Punica, which was published in Venice in 1493. Punica was composed by Tiberius Catius Silius Italicus and is the longest extant poem in Latin literature, consisting of seventeen books that recounts in verse the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE). The narrative includes the siege of Saguntum ...by the Carthaginians, Hannibal's crossing of the Alps, the destructive battle at Ticinus, the Trebia, Lake Trasimene, Scipio's trip to the Underworld, and Hannibal's final defeat at Zama by Scipio Africanus. Tiberius Catius Silius Italicus was a prominent Roman statesman, born around 26 CE. The second oldest rare book in Archives & Special Collections is Lucretius, which was published by Aldus Manutius in 1515. Lucretius, also known as De rerum natura or On the Nature of Things in English, was composed by Titus Lucretius Carus and is a six-book, Latin, philosophical hexameter poem that sets forth the physical theory of the Greek philosopher Epicurus. Titus Lucretius Carus was an Epicurean poet of the late Roman republican era and has come to be considered a primary source of information on Epicurean physics.

Today’s #MarauderMonday is senior Kaitlyn Hopple who hails from Felton, Pennsylvania. Hopple is a Dual Early Childhood and Special Education Major with a Minor in Psychology who is expected to graduate this Spring. Hopple is on the executive board for the Millersville student chapter for the Pennsylvania Association for Educational Communications and Technology and is part of the mental health club DMAX, the National Society of Leadership and Success, the education-based hono...rs fraternity Kappa Delta Pi, and has served on the Orientation and Transition team for three years as an Orientation Leader and on the Orientation Planning Committee. Hopple’s favorite professor is Dr. Pfannenstiel. She truly gears her English courses to all the majors present in her class. I loved that I could meet her requirements and learn from her while also adding my passion for education to the research I did and the papers I wrote, Hopple shares, She also helped me to see the value of technology in education and how it can be incorporated into all aspects of learning. In her free time, you can catch Hopple listening to audiobooks, painting, spending time with her friends, and working as a substitute in local school districts. Her favorite quote is "To teach is to touch a life forever" from teacher and astronaut Christa McAuliffe. After graduation, Hopple plans to teach in a school district in York or Lancaster counties in an inclusive elementary classroom. See more

Dr. Stacey Irwin is a professor in the Media Arts Production program at Millersville University. But she’s also a filmmaker. Recently, her film, Raising Faith: Stories About Dyslexia, debuted at the Helsinki Education International Film Festival.
A big congratulations to all of our students, faculty and staff who made in-person learning safe and effective this semester! Students will now be finishing out the semester remotely.
While the job is tough, 2013 grad Becca Knier says it’s an honor to tell the stories that make headlines around the globe. What I want people to know about journalists is local news journalists live in your communities and tell your stories, she says. I don’t get paid more to seek out bad news. I capture what happened today; the news no matter what it is.
