Today, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to the American people about the urgent need to pass legislation to protect the constitutional... right to vote and the integrity of our elections. The fight for voting rights has been a long and enduring battle. League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania applauds the administration for speaking out and calling for action. Our full statement is below. Watch today's remarks youtube.com/watch?v=090lj9MXzlE
"One of LWV's strongest tenets is that the freedom to vote is not a partisan issue; it is a right promised to every American, regardless of affiliation, background, race, sex, or any other factor. "
This Jan 6 the League of Women Voters (US) is holding candlelight vigils and voter registration events to stand up for democracy and urge the Senate to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. If you would like to participate: https://www.mobilize.us/democracyvigils/map/
We've got work to do in PA in 2022. Join the League today to defend democracy and get involved in your community!
During League's November Program on Privacy and Security, our nationally recognized expert had data that system incursion is now a bigger risk than phishing. Make sure your operating system and malware protection is up-to-date. See our December newsletter on our website clarionlwvpa.org under the Resources tab for more recommendations.
Please join us tomorrow, Tuesday December 14th at 7pm via Zoom for a program on Pennsylvania's mass incarceration problem. Email [email protected] for the link. Our speakers include Jennifer Black and John Rowland. Dr. Rowland, PhD is from the Abolitionist Law Center where he works on ending long-term solitary confinement and death by incarceration among other things. Dr. Black, PhD is the Central PA Community Organizer from Straight Ahead where her focus is to coordinate, unite, and build on the activism occurring around prison justice issues, to envision an abolitionist future.
I have stood outside of polling places and talked to people about gerrymandering. Yes, even in a county where many more people register for one party than the other major party, people want fair maps.
In 2021, we saw the highest number of reproductive rights restrictions made into law in a single year. After oral arguments were heard this week on Dobbs v Jack...son Women's Health Organization, we have reason to worry that the rights promised in Roe v Wade will be rolled back. Here's what you need to know about the current cases that could change the face of health care in our country:
I registered for the LWVPA virtual convention. We are looking for other people who might be interested in attending. Our local League will pay for 5 other people to attend. Please contact a LWVCCO Board member (email: [email protected]) to get authorization or more information. Yes it is 9 hours of Zoom crammed into two days but there are exciting keynote speakers planned around this year's theme, The League: Keystone of Democracy. It's also a chance to see an example of the rules under which our governing bodies operate. (Roberts Rules in action can be more exciting than one might expect from reading them.) Don't wait the price goes up after April 18th.
Here's your Easter themed explanation of gerrymandering. For the record, I am an almond lover, so it makes me really angry that the jelly-bean lovers cheated so there was only jelly beans and no almonds at the peeps picnic.
The League is happy to announce our 2021 Day of Action! This summer, state legislatures will begin the process to draw new district lines. The lines will determ...ine how our communities are represented and whether our voices will be heard. We know that when the public is involved in the redistricting process, we achieve fairer maps. Join us to learn more about redistricting and how you can get involved on our Day of Action, April 29th!
LWVUS and LWVPA support HR 1/SR 1, the For the People Act. Opponents have been busy with misinformation. The bill isn't perfect, but contains many important reforms. Politifact offers clarification on some points of concern.
League is partnering with FDPA and several other organization to advocate for this vital Legislation. We support the current version of Legislative and Congressional Redistricting Act (HB 22, SB 222).
When Dorothy Height showed up at Barnard College in 1929 with her admission letter in hand, she was told by a college dean that they had already reached their q...uota of "two Negro students per year." Unwilling to defer her dreams, she visited New York University with her Barnard acceptance letter and they admitted her on the spot. Today we will witness history as the first woman ever is sworn-in as Vice President of the United States. After a historical election, with the most voter parti...cipation than ever before, America has elected the first woman in the White House, 100 years after winning the right to vote. No matter your political beliefs, this is a moment to celebrate as young girls, and women of color can see themselves running and winning a presidential election. We will continue in our fight to protect our democracy and ensure that women in high offices are no longer the exception, but the rule. While eyes are on the inauguration today, we're preparing for the work ahead. It's essential that PA legislators listen to county commissioners and election of...ficials in addressing concerns from the 2020 election. We'll be doing all we can to ensure voting in PA is accessible and fair and to restore trust in the process. See more
The data is from California, but the article makes points about the cost of permitting and the need for new transmission lines that applies to Pennsylvania.
Dozens of labor leaders, advocates, bar associations call on lawmakers to drop judicial gerrymandering bill. HB 38 bill does more to politicize courts instead ...of alleviating that issue. Many orgs oppose it. Are there ANY that support it? Why is THIS the constitutional amendment getting a vote? See more
Sunbury Editorial: Pennsylvania shouldn’t be considering geographic regions for judges. Instead, lawmakers should be proposing ways to move away from electing j...udges altogether, instead opting for a merit-based selection process. We agree completely. Join us in sharing this message with our PA legislators. See more
The next few months will shape PA politics for years to come. It's too late to put an independent citizens commission in place to draw new district maps, but it...'s not too late for more transparency in the process. Fair Districts PA will be following every step, pushing for reform and doing all we can to create a more accountable, responsive legislature. Join us! See more
