Yo! Here it is. Christo Johnson of King Azaz did a set on the roof a few weeks ago, the amazing Bob Sweeney filmed and Jesse Kennedy did the audio. It came out fantastic. Jesse Kennedy captured the audio and the final piece is honestly one of the coolest things you've seen and heard in the past year. Here it is! The third installment of the LAVA Broken Roof Sessions! G'Tayah Archie aka TCG BeatZ came up as a kid at LAVA and now runs the recording studio on the third floor of the building. She performed two awesome songs on the roof last week which you can watch here. PHA is still actively trying to remove the encampment on Ridge Ave across the street from their $45M headquarters.

As you can probably imagine, the ongoing pandemic has dramatically affected LAVA's ability to raise money for programming, bills and repairs. We are currently surviving through donations and the organizations that use the offices in the building, but those sources are also being stretched thin right now. We are asking folks to become sustaining members by setting up a small monthly donation. You can do this by visiting the LAVA website, and clicking where it says "Keep LAVA i...n the black!!" http://lavazone.org/ You can choose a monthly donation amount or set your own by clicking the Donate button and checking the box to set your donations to repeat every month. While the building will not be hosting large events until the end of the pandemic, your money will go towards housing the following projects: Prometheus Radio Project (an organization that helps community groups set up radio stations and broadcast their own content) Workers Revolutionary Collective (the group that has been working tirelessly to organize the ongoing James Talib-Dean Camp protest on the parkway) DiVerse Entertainment (an arts and education project that helps young artists record and promote their work) Weekly food distribution (Every Thursday beginning around 3PM) Monthly clothing and toy distribution (Second Saturday of every month, beginning around 9AM) We are currently working to make the space available for community projects and organizations while keeping the space as clean and safe as possible. Jihe Golden and Mahdi El were both voted out of the collective and are no longer members. They have changed the locks on the doors and assaulted a friend of the collective who was trying to regain access. We are currently pursuing legal action to get our building back. URGENT: LAVA NEEDS VOLUNTEERS As some of you may have heard, over the last week two former members of the LAVA collective have attempted to seize control of the building. Banned for renting space without approval and pocketing the money, these members have attempted to change the locks and have resorted to calling the police on members of the collective in order to maintain their control. Luckily, their bid to take the building for themselves has failed and the LAVA collectiv...e is now able to access the building. However, because these former members have chosen to involve police, LAVA is unable to bar them from entering the space as well - and if they see an opportunity, they may attempt another lockout. That's why LAVA needs volunteers - people who come and hang out at the space. So long as the space remains occupied, the chances of another lockout are slim; and once a lockout is no longer a possibility, a just solution can be found. In short: If you have the time to spare, come through and hang out; all we need are people willing to be present. Small actions like this will help preserve the space and all it represents for years to come; if you can help, contact us at [email protected]

TL;DR: Two people who were voted out of the LAVA Collective have changed the locks on our building and refuse to let organizations and volunteers back in. We'll need your support soon as we work to regain 4134 Lancaster Avenue. ATTN Supporters of LAVA Space: the LAVA Collective is a decision-making body and the owner of 4134 Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Several non-profit and activist organizations are based there, including the Human Rights Coalition, the Promet...heus Radio Project, Lava Free Library, and a free weekly food distribution group. We have been unilaterally locked out of the building by Jihe Golden and Mahdi Sufi El, who are in violation of decisions made by the LAVA Collective. All activities that are currently taking place at illegitimately-occupied 4134 Lancaster Ave are in violation of decisions made by the LAVA Collective, as both Jihe Golden and Mahdi Sufi El have been asked to leave the collective, Mahdi in the past and Jihe in December 2018. During the second week in January, the aforementioned people changed the locks on the doors of our building and are claiming that 4134 Lancaster Ave is theirs and theirs only to use. They have made false claims against organizations and volunteers that have been using the building for the last several years -- LAVA Collective members -- and have not cooperated with our efforts at mediation. A vote by consensus in December 2018 was in favor of removing these two people from the Collective & cutting all ties with them. This retaliation on their part has further complicated the situation. We are committed to dealing with this situation in a way where no one gets hurt, and we have NO plans to use courts or cops to enforce our will. We will not abandon our space, however, and we are calling on you for your support to remain a resource in this community in West Philadelphia at 4134 Lancaster Avenue.
