Everything was different in 2020, right? Not everything, our Lansdale Borough Police Department's exemplary service to the community remained at the high level we're all accustomed to in the face of a pandemic and many other challenges. Take a look at the service awards presented by Chief Trail to the greatest Police Department...yes, we know, we're a little biased!

"Let me cut to the chase. If you’re looking for a haircut, you can probably get that just about anywhere, maybe even in your own home, 2020-style. But, if you’re looking for something more, check out this week's #BusinessSpotlight the American Shave House. American Shave House was established in 2017 by owner Ryan Adams. On his website, he's described as ...a skilled Barber of 15 years, father, friend, North Penn Graduate, and Lansdale local. Striving to re-develop the cult...ure of Barbering in the North Penn area". And so it would seem that this tale of success begins as it has for many of the others that have come before: a local story, a local mission, and a passion to impart lasting values throughout our community. Ryan didn’t open American Shave House to simply provide haircuts; he opened it to be transformative, and American Shave House represents this in every sense of the word. Expect to be transported from the troubles of today as you step back in time into the self proclaimed House of Handsome that is the American Shave House. With its eclectic memorabilia, antique barbershop chairs, and Sinatra soundtrack, American Shave House takes you back to some of the simpler values of days gone by. Let American Shave House transform you while you enjoy a break from the stress of the day. Take a little time out for yourself and check out this amazing local entrepreneur." ~BJ Breish

Pennsylvania's new "Move Over" law will go into effect on Tuesday, April 27. The law requires motorists approaching an emergency response area to merge into a lane further away, or to slow down to 20 miles per hour under the posted speed limit if they cannot safely merge. Check out the new penalties for not doing so and be sure to follow the new regulations. https://bit.ly/3a7l82p

"Still shopping this holiday season? This week's #BusinessSpotlight Chantilly Floral offers way more than those beautiful roses. You can literally complete all of your last minute gift shopping here, we did! Bags, belts, candles, jewelry, soaps, clothing, gloves, scarfs, hats, and so much more, you'd almost forget you're shopping at a florist if not for the amazing assortment and knowledgeable staff who can happily guide you through creating the most perfect floral arrangemen...t. Shop with confidence knowing that Chantilly takes your safety seriously. This unfortunately was the reason they have temporarily closed their space in Harleysville (not enough room there to maintain social distancing) but the great part about this is that they shifted all of their inventory to Lansdale so it's bursting at the seams with new treasures. Don't delay that trip though! Once out of stock there is a chance they may have trouble restocking quickly with the delays that are currently being experienced in some of the supply chain. So shop early, shop often, and most importantly, shop Lansdale at Chantilly Floral." --BJ Breish, EDC Member

The Borough has issued a Snow Alert effective 12:00 pm on Wednesday, December 16. The emergency will be in effect until further notice. We will continue to monitor forecasts and should predictions change, the Borough will adjust the upcoming alert. For citizens, a snow alert means that all vehicles parked on those streets where signage indicates no parking during a snow alert are required, by law, to be moved elsewhere in order to allow snow plowing of the road surface. Sn...ow alert signage dictates which side of the street residents may not park on when an alert is declared. Residents may park in their driveways (if available), alternate side of their street or another street not marked "No Parking." It is not the policy of the Borough to direct any resident or citizen where to park (i.e. we do not require residents to park in alleys when a snow alert is declared), we can only instruct where parking is not permitted. These parking restrictions are put into place for the purpose of public safety as well as the efficiency of snow clearing on Borough streets; vehicles in violation are subject to ticketing and/or towing by the Lansdale Borough Police Department. If you see a vehicle parked on a Snow Alert Route, please contact Lansdale Police at 215-368-1800. For any other weather related emergency, please dial 9-1-1. We would also like to remind residents and business owners that it is illegal to deposit snow removed from sidewalks or private property onto any Borough street. Ordinance 1172 - Section 302.3.3 prohibits the throwing or blowing of snow into the streets from sidewalk or properties. Violators are subject to fines. To assist emergency personnel, specifically firefighters, please be sure to clear a three (3) foot clearance around all fire hydrants on your property. The Borough is planning for the snow event with crews out preparing known trouble spots and will remain on call until after the Snow Alert is lifted. Throughout the storm, crews will be clearing snow on all Borough roads which can take up to eight hours for one complete route. Should this storm feature ice which can collect on trees and wires along with windy conditions, Lansdale Electric asks that if you see any downed wires, please stay away and contact them immediately at 215-361-8371 with the location. Under no circumstance should residents attempt to lift, move or adjust electric wires. It will be posted on the website and social media channels when the Snow Alert is lifted and residents can resume normal parking. The Borough also asks citizens to be neighborly and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need assistance. Also be sure to keep house numbers visible so that emergency responders can find you in case of emergency. Working together to overcome the obstacles and adversity created by weather situations such as these creates a greater sense of community and kindness. We'll get through this together, just as we always do.

Home fire fatalities increase during the winter. To make sure communities know about the increased risk, USFA partners with the National Fire Protection Association to Put a Freeze on Winter Fires. The initiative focuses on hazards that may increase a family’s risk of having a house fire. With new or reinstated restrictions due to COVID, this holiday season may look different than in years past. Families may put up more holiday decorations to lift their spirits. Remind them to decorate safely. You can follow the Put a Freeze on Winter Fires campaign on your social media channels and by following #winterfiresafety.

Please check out the response to the latest directives related to COVID-19 from Borough Emergency Management Coordinator, Rick Lesniak; Police Chief, Mike Trail and Borough Manager, John J. Ernst. On Thursday, December 10, Governor Wolf introduced additional temporary restrictions in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. While these restrictions may not directly impact us personally, many will impose additional challenges to our business community - one already sufferin...g from several months of uncertainty. While it is easy to feel powerless with these directives, we can still help our local businesses through these challenges. Although customers may not be able to shop in the way we are used to, goods and services offered by our small businesses are still needed. By continuing to order takeout meals when possible, purchasing gift cards from local establishments, using curb side pickup where available and even ordering online we can help Lansdale businesses that may be struggling. And as we assist our business community to stay afloat, it is important that we do not underestimate how much we can help everyone in our community by following public health guidelines. By just staying at home if you can, you’re making a vital difference. Wearing a mask and remaining socially distant if you do go out goes a long way in helping keep you and your family safe. Making efforts to stay healthy and avoiding high-risk activities reinforces Lansdale’s community ties and reminds us that we are all in this together. When the new owners took the reins at Lansdale’s favorite family deli in June 2019, Bob and Tami DiPietro had no idea what was in store. They just wanted to continue the decades of tradition and tastes at Giuliano's Deli, 429 Chestnut Street (corner of Fifth and Chestnut). We still use the same vendors and the recipes Jim (Giuliano) taught us, how to make his hoagies and cheesesteaks, says Tami. People tell us, ‘We Googled best cheesesteaks and best hoagies in Lansdale, a...nd you came up first.’ We’re glad to hear that. Among the few tweaks, Tami added her home-baked cookies and specialties I was always a baker, since I was a little girl, with a lot of my grandmom’s recipes. Then the pandemic hit. Like most small businesses, some customers were lost, particularly on the catering and corporate side. But Giuliano’s adapted, adding curbside pickup, which they still offer. Fortunately, the nature of our business wasn’t changed terribly, Tami says. We are not an eat-in, and we don’t have alcohol. And regulars remained loyal. "We still get the people that come in and say, ‘I’m living in Florida now, but whenever I come into town I have to stop here,’ Tami says. We love hearing that, and we hope we’re doing right by the Giuliano name" Offering pizza, burgers, wraps and sandwiches, roast beef, roast pork and barbecue, as well as salads and breakfasts, Giuliano’s is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 to 2 Saturdays. Reach them on Facebook, at [email protected], or at (215) 368-0412. --Bruce Schwartz, EDC Member
