District Attorney Mark Powell is joined by Lackawanna County police officials to kick off a targeted aggressive-driving enforcement wave, which will run through April 25. Lackawanna County police departments, in cooperation with the county's Police Traffic Services Project, which is administered by Powell's office, will join the Pennsylvania State Police and more than 200 municipal police agencies to conduct the enforcement wave. The effort will focus on speeding, distracted ...driving, and work zone awareness. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions will also be stopped and cited. Joining Powell, from left, are South Abington Township Police Chief Robert Gerrity, Taylor Police Chief Stephen Derenick, Old Forge Police Chief Jason Dubernas, Clarks Summit Police Chief Chris Yarns and State Trooper Bob Urban. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, friends and fellow officers of U.S. Capitol Police Officer William "Billy" Evans who was killed in the line of duty yesterday at the Capitol. The loss of any police officer is a loss to all of us in law enforcement.

We sincerely hope this sentencing brings some comfort and closure to the family and friends of Rebecca Blanco. We also hope it sends a strong message to commercial drivers that if you drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, we will hold you accountable.

As a father of four, I just can’t imagine how anyone could hurt a child. I sincerely hope the sentencing in this case sends a clear message to those who harm children. - District Attorney Mark Powell

Eileen Julie Dougherty, 40, of 922 Delaware St., Scranton, is jailed without bail at the Lackawanna County Prison on homicide charges following her arrest Wednesday in the stabbing death of her fiancé George Shencavitz, 31. During her arraignment, Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell asked the court not to set bail, saying Dougherty is "a danger to society (and) a danger to herself."

The District Attorney's Office, as it has the past three years, participated in this year's "Adopt an Angel" program sponsored by the Lackawanna County Office of Family & Youth Services. Nearly 500 children in the county submit letters to Santa and program sponsors like the DA's Office try to make each child's Christmas wishes come true. Merry Christmas everyone! Have a safe and healthy holiday season!!!
