It’s perfectly sensible to worry about academic setbacks during the pandemic. Ever since the first stay-at-home orders were issued, teachers in Edutopia’s community have reported that some students have been pressed into caretaking duties or forced to get jobs, while many others couldn’t get online at all. The crisis first exposed, and then cruelly amplified, the inequities bound up in issues of poverty, race, disability, and rural isolation. Months into the pandemic, attenda...nce and attentiveness remained abysmal. There’s a broad and growing consensus that online learning, in both its hybrid and purely remote forms, has been an anemic substitute for in-person instruction. But our obsessive need to measure academic progress and loss to the decimal pointan enterprise that feels at once comfortably scientific and hopelessly subjectiveis also woefully out of tune with the moment, says Berger. I kept hearing about ‘remediating learning loss,’ and I had this vision that school was going to be a place where all the kids come in and get tested and triaged and sent to different areas to get fixed, Berger told me, almost wincing as he explained why he wrote the article for The Atlantic. The intention is goodbut our children are resilient, not broken, and as long as kids feel like their job is to come to school to be fixed, their hearts won’t be in their own work, he insists. When children have social emotional learning, they are more prepared for life. Life preparedness means from early childhood to adulthood. Children need to relate to others, be empathic and address their own emotions. If parents and teaches always step in and take over, children are powerless on their own in peer situations, new surroundings, transitions and owning their actions. Is your child emotionally able to take care of himself/herself?When I was a parent, this was not something that even crossed our consciousness. Undoubtedly, today this has to be a topic that is thought about and considered or it needs to be.

The City of Allentown is suspending bulk item curbside collection until further notice as a result of the COVID-19 Disaster Emergency, effective March 29. -Bulk... items, by ordinance definition, includes "any specific municipal waste item that does not fit in a 32-gallon trash can or in a 30-gallon trash bag, which include but is not limited to furniture, mattresses, construction debris, etc." -Waste Management has been directed by the City to place rejection notices on any bulk items placed out for collection during this time. -Bulk items that are not removed from the curb are subject to a SWEEP violation ticket with additional costs. Additionally: ALL HOUSEHOLD TRASH MUST BE IN PLASTIC BAGS and may not be placed loosely inside a trash can. This safety measure will contain household waste in a manner that is safer for the collection employees. Regular trash and recycling collections continue across the city.
