HUNTERS! PA GAME COMMISSION PROPOSES BAN AFFECTING HUNTING, SMALL BUSINESS, AND FARMERS Some bad news for sportsmen in PA. Devastating news if you’re one of th...e many small businesses or one of the more than thousand farmers that raise deer, or produce deer attractants for scent and specialty feeds in PA. The Pennsylvania State Game Commission is proposing a ban on the use of deer attractants and feeding statewide because the commission thinks it will prevent CWD or chronic wasting decease, that only accounts for approximately 2% of the deer population throughout the state. In the consideration of this action they threaten to destroy the more than $100 million dollar agriculture and deer attractant industry in Pennsylvania. The ban on popular hunting attractants that they are proposing not only ignores the damage that this does to the hunting industry, farmers, and the sportsmen who utilizes these products, but does this all while ignoring the hard science, and the experts that have studied CWD for over a decade. The Philadelphia Inquirer Reported in 2018, Nicholas Haley, an assistant professor of microbiology at Midwestern University in Arizona, who has studied CWD for more than a decade has said: Of all the liquids and body parts on a deer, urine (the natural attractant that is used in the manufacturing of hunting scents) has the lowest levels of infectivity. He believes regulatory agencies have targeted it for the wrong reasons.Urine kind of represents this low-hanging fruit, he said. It's easy to regulate, and it makes it look like you're doing something to prevent the spread of CWD. As in the dairy industry we see a trend in PA regulators attempting to regulate farmers out of their business, and this time is no different. It is no surprise to see the game commission attempting to monopolize on what the New Yorker reported as a $100 million dollar industry in PA. An agricultural industry that cuts into the profit that their agency stands to make if they can regulate this segment agriculture out of business, leading to more Pennsylvanians losing their livelihoods and potentially their property and the risk of bankruptcy. We need to protect and support our local businesses, and agriculture throughout PA instead of allowing activists government agencies to regulate them out of existence. The closing date on commenting on the ban is May 7th. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is looking for information related to the deaths of three bald eagles that were discovered in the same general area of Wayne Co...unty. Each of the eagles were found in the vicinity of the Texas-Palmyra Highway and State Route 652, near Honesdale, in Texas Township. The first eagle, discovered on Feb. 28, was alive but in poor condition and did not survive. The second bird was found dead on March 16 and the third was found dead on April 4. The three eagles were found within .3 miles of each other and were reported by separate individuals. Necropsies of the eagles showed no signs of trauma. However, toxicological screenings performed on two of the eagles revealed traces of a controlled drug commonly used to euthanize domestic animals and livestock. The Game Commission is working in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct the investigation. Anyone with information related to these incidents is asked to call the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Northeast Region Office at 570-675-1143 or the Operation Game Thief hotline at 1-888-PGC-8001 or online at https://bit.ly/3airvh4. All information is kept confidential. Thank you in advance for your assistance and for helping to protect Pennsylvania wildlife.
