For the second part of our Environmental Awareness Program at HHHS, environmentalist Rob Greenfield shared his many advocacy projects, including this past experience with his "Food Waste Fiasco." The project called attention to the often perfectly good food that is wasted and disposed of while 1 in 7 Americans are considered food insecure. Rob encouraged the students to "be the change you wish to see in the world" and to make one small positive change for the environment each day. Every small step makes a difference.

Thank you to our friends at SofterWare, Inc. for their amazing generosity! SofterWare recently donated $7,800 to support the HHEF's innovative educational programs. Their employees also purchased gifts for HHSD families in need this holiday season. We are grateful for the joy they have brought to our District and for the many ways they support our Hatters!

The HHEF is delighted to welcome our next speaker in the Girls’ STEAM Series, Dr. Laura Boykin. Dr. Boykin is a regarded computational biologist helping small farmers in East Africa use genomics and supercomputing to mitigate the devastating impacts of invasive insects on the cassava crop. Cassava is a root vegetable that nearly 800 million people worldwide rely on for sustenance and income. In advance of her presentation for KVMS and HHHS students, Dr. Boykin will answer questions from any HHSD student (K-12) about her career, life, and her work in Africa. We can accept questions before 1/18. Use this quick form: https://form.123formbuilder.com/5770748// to submit your child’s question.

We are grateful for the helpful advice marine biologist Dr. Kristen Marhaver provided for students during her recent Girls' STEAM presentations. Dr. Marhaver shared her most pivotal life experiences and enabled students to view a baby coral she is breeding in her lab with her microscope lens on screen. In addition to Girls' STEAM, Dr. Marhaver answered questions from students across the District and took us to the Caribbean Sea to answer them. Check out the full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHnvcRjK_VE&feature=youtu.be HHSD Families - Don't forget any student K-12 can submit a question for our next speaker, structural engineer Roma Agrawal. Check our posts or PM for the link to submit!
