Old Herman School

On this day in 1845, the first baseball team was organized. A modified version of the game was popular with Herman School students. They would play with rag balls and used sticks or branches as bats. Mitts or gloves were a luxury our students could not afford. Despite their crude equipment, they still managed to enjoy this team sport during their recess, much as the kids in this photo are.

Last weekend, the Herman School Association board met to close the schoolhouse for the season. Thank you to everyone who came to visit us this summer even during these uncertain times!

Despite a slow start to the tour season, visitor numbers have dramatically increased, and we saw record numbers of visitors several Sundays this summer! The Herman School is only open for 2 more weeks, so if you haven't visited us yet this summer, you'd better do it soon!

Congratulations to Rebecca Sharpless, Selinsgrove Area School District's winner of the Herman School Association education award. Rebecca will be attending Penn State University, and we wish her good luck in her studies!
