Girarden Community Garden

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Girarden community gardener and good friend Tony passed away last week. From the beginning of the creation of Girarden, he became a dedicated member of the garden crew - always watering dry beds, planting and tending his favorite strawberries and cantaloupes, supplying the tunes to rock our work days, and heading garden security. Living in an apartment on Girard Avenue right near the garden after having been homeless for many years, Girarden became a source of fresh vegetables for Tony's cooking, and more importantly a place of shared community, friendship and love. May he rest in peace. Tony Washington will be greatly missed.

Our friends from Ursinus College came out to help with gardening tasks and to enjoy being outside in the sun for the morning. We picked up trash, cut back vines, weed whacked, planted seeds and did huge amounts of weeding. Thank you, team, we are grateful for all your help and friendship!
