Without a doubt, 2020 has become a very challenging year. With Penn State closing on November 20th and the restrictions of numbers of people that can be in one room at a time, the following is our plan for 2020: 1. Moving into the Penn Stater on Friday November 13th and NOT wrapping any of the toys. We expect to be restricted to no more than 25 people in a room at a time. 2. At least for the Centre County food pantries, we plan to fill the orders with four items per child b...ut instead of wrapping them to otherwise put four items into a smaller garbage bag, labeled by age and gender, and then consolidated by food pantry, 3. Collection points will be significantly reduced to those locations that can support being a collection point so we will be trying to draw media support to, as much as possible, shift from having donations of toys to making direct monetary donations to Toys for Tots for Centre County at the toysfortots.org website. Our local sub-account can be reached directly at: https://lemont-pa.toysfortots.org. Historically,we take the prior year's donations and use that to purchase toys from wholesalers leaving about a $10,000 reserve for the next year. We are looking to draw down our sub-account of approximately $28,000 to near $0 and if we get even more monetary donations than can otherwise be expected, we can potentially tap into this year's donations to further supplement this year. We have access to about eight different wholesalers and can get toys from some of the wholesalers in 2-3 days. 4. We will be looking to try to get all of the toys and food removed from the Penn Stater on Wednesday November 18th so that would be the date that I would be hoping to get the toys to Mifflin County. 5. The annual food drive will also continue as in the past. Based on recent news articles, the need for food is greater than usual. 6. Our annual kick-off breakfast is also cancelled for 2020. For those of you that may not be aware, last year we obtained significantly more toys directly from donations to the Toys for Tots Foundation than in years past. If we had too many toys or funds left over, we would receive no toys from the Foundation the next year. Mifflin county is not only the second poorest county in PA but also, there has never been anyone come to the plate to become a Toys for Tots coordinator for Mifflin County. Last year we saw this as an opportunity to ensure that we were within the guidelines of the Foundation to obtain toys the next year as well as to provide some toys to this impoverished county. In the matter of less than four weeks we had Father John Harwood from the Lewistown Episcopal church, a group of Geisinger doctors, a semi-trailer and truck, and other volunteers in place to accept over 3500 toys for distribution for needy children in the Lewistown area.
