It is with deep sadness that the FVFD announces the passing of Life Member Edward Rock. Ed was a member for over 50 years. Ed also held Jr Officer positions in his younger days. As Ed got older he took pride in working the kitchen at the firehouse and attended almost every fundraising event. Ed will be deeply missed! https://memorials.geiselfuneralhome.com//446/obituary.php
It is with great sadness that the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of Life Member Laura H Wishard at the age of 84, mother of our current Fire Chief William Wishard. Laura was a member of the departments ladies auxiliary for many many years. She helped with many fundraisers over the years. In Laura’s younger days her and her husband William Wishard lived on the second floor of the firehouse when it was an apartment. For years while living there she... was the person who always answered the emergency phone when calls were reported directly to the firehouse and she always activated the house siren. Laura was born and raised In Fayetteville and lived in Fayetteville most of her life except for some time she had moved to Kansas to be with her husband who was in the Air Force. Laura’s fathers was one of the founding fathers of the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department. Her father had put his home up as collateral to start the fire department. Laura will be greatly missed! This week, October 4th-10th, is Fire Prevention Week! Typically during this week our department travels to schools within our first due to talk to children and teachers about fire safety. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 this was not able to be done this year. With that being said we would like to provide everyone with some tips relating to fire safety. We hope that you will share/practice these tips with your families! 1. Keep matches and lighters away from children. 2. CALL 91...1 for Emergencies! 3. Have a Home Evacuation Plan for you and your family in the event of a fire. Establish a pre determined meeting place outside to meet your family. 4. Close your bedroom doors at night. 5. Once outside do NOT go back in! 6. Do NOT use water to try to extinguish grease fires. 7. Never leave food unattended while cooking. 8. Change your Smoke Detector Batteries every 6 months. Test them monthly! While we have only listed a few tips there is a whole lot more that you can do to help prevent fires and stay safe. Attached below is a link to NFPAs website which provides many more tips. https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education PS. If your interested in helping us find you in the event of an emergency at your residence please contact our station (717-352-7723) and get a FREE ADDRESS SIGN! Also we do provide a limited number of FREE Battery Operated Smoke Detectors to residents of our first due!
