Did you know that black bears can feed up to 20 hours a day in the fall preparing for winter denning? Black bears enter hibernation in late fall, with pregnant ...females being the first to enter dens, usually in mid to late November. Onset of hibernation can vary from year to year depending on the availability of fall foods, with poor food years resulting in earlier denning. While many people think of caves, bears rarely use caves for winter denning. A winter den can be a hollow tree, under the roots of fallen trees, or even just a depression on the ground. Bears line their dens with bark, grass, and leaves. Pregnant females den alone and give birth while hibernating in the den. Hibernation in bears more closely resembles resting than the deep torpor of other species. During hibernation, bears are alert and capable of fleeing or defending the den. Bears do not eat, drink, urinate, or defecate while dormant. In fact, on warm winter days, bears may emerge and wander nearby. Watch the Pennsylvania black bear den cam LIVE, brought to you by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and @HDonTap, from a den in Monroe County now https://bit.ly/36IESYu.

Whether you are fishing, hiking, or birding on state game lands this fall, make sure you are seen by wearing orange! Earlier this year, Pennsylvania Board of C...ommissioners adopted new regulations to require nonhunters to wear at least 250 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing, collectively on the head, chest, and back, visible from 360 degrees, when visiting state game lands. According to regulation, State Game Land’s visitors must meet the fluorescent orange requirements from November 15 to December 15, 2020 but is recommended anytime during open hunting seasons. This includes Sunday, Nov. 22 which is open for bear hunting during the statewide general bear season, and Sunday, Nov. 29 which is open for deer hunting during the firearms deer season.
