Mighty Girl history, artist Georgia O'Keeffe, the "Mother of American Modernism," was born in 1887. O'Keeffe spent much of her life in New Mexico and New York and her most famous paintings show the influence of both locations with her large, close-up paintings of flowers and her dramatic cityscapes. Considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, O'Keeffe was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and the National Medal of Arts in 1985, a year before her death at the age of 98.
