What is Aquatic Therapy? Aquatic therapy is a form of rehabilitation that takes place in multi-depth pools or tanks. It enables the use of a variety of therapeutic interventions such as stretching, strengthening, joint mobilization, balance and gait training, as well as endurance training. The aquatic atmosphere helps to elicit functional recovery by allowing the completion of therapeutic interventions and exercises that a patient may not have been able to participate in on l...and. This is due to the special properties of water such as buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, viscosity, and surface tension. In addition, these qualities help provide a therapeutic atmosphere that can easily be adjusted according to the individual’s needs. The main reasons for utilizing aquatic therapy are to: Increase range of motion, flexibility, and strength Initiate weight-bearing activities Provide training and balance work with decreased stress on the weight-bearing joints Provide cardiovascular exercise and improve circulation Replicate functional activities in a safer environment and reduce muscle guarding Reduce risk of injury or re-injury during therapy by re-establishing correct movement patterns Promote relaxation and relieve pain. Here at Eberle’s Physical Therapy, we provide one on one hands on training in the water with our patients. Our pool is 10 x 15 ft with depths ranging from 4 5.5 ft and is accessible via the stairs or lift. The temperature is maintained between 93-95 degrees F. This range is conducive for exercise and reducing spasticity due to waters ability to transfer heat through convection. Our primary goal here at Eberle’s is to decrease our patient’s pain, increase their range of motion, strength, and balance in order to help them return to their previous daily activities. Feel free to give us a call at 814-734-7444 and make an appointment to take a tour of our facility or ask any further questions or concerns you may have. See more
