Initially showing his work at the Venice Biennale in 1990, it wasn't until Ghanian artist El Anatsui participated in the 2006 and 2007 exhibitions in Venice that his metal tapestries captivated audiences. His international fame increased as did the demand for his monumental, shimmering metal works that hang draped on many museum walls. His story is one that was welcomed and quickly absorbed into contemporary culture. Each work is a collective effort by artists trained by Anat...sui to gather and sort discarded commercial metal products, such as bottle caps and aluminum pieces. These are assembled and connected with wire, which results in open-work metal quilts. Up-cycling commercial cast-offs join a craft sensibility with a high-art scale. Recognition for Anatsui's work led a new curiosity and appreciation for the arts of Contemporary Africa. Our untitled lithograph harkens the sensibility of the wall hangings on a domestic scale. It implies a variety of metal components with metallic inks set against vibrant yellows, browns, and reds. The paper is dye-cut to emphasize the shapes employed and folded as Anatsui's hanging works would drape. #printmaking #printcollector #etching #engraving #intaglio #reliefprint #woodcut #linocut #lithograph #painting #drawing #collage #ifpda #fineart #artcollector #wpa #atelier17 #socialrealism #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #modernart #contemporaryart #africanamericanart #surrealism #newyorkschool

Stanley Whitney’s set of eight large etchings are masterful achievements, demonstrating a broad range of intaglio technique. Limiting the series to black ink allows Whitney to explore a specific sense of drama between light and lack of light in these notational works. A loose grid has been the hallmark of Whitney’s painting practice for some fifteen years, and the bright, fluid color of his canvases is not at all missed. Distinctive layers of aquatint create deep tones in the... four darker compositions while the white of the paper radiates light in the loose structures of the four light compositions. Only a highly seasoned artist would find himself at home creating new gestures with etched metal and exploiting his abstract language at such a high level. #printmaking #printcollector #etching #engraving #intaglio #reliefprint #woodcut #linocut #lithograph #painting #drawing #collage #ifpda #fineart #artcollector #wpa #atelier17 #socialrealism #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #modernart #contemporaryart #africanamericanart #surrealism #newyorkschool #philadelphia #philadelphiaartist @ Dolan/Maxwell See more

Color should not be submissive It cannot be subjugated. It will not obey It should not play nice Color is unruly... Color isn’t for the faint of heart It can be hard and strong It can be bold It can be clear and true it can also lie It can trick and deceive us all Color does what it wants It misbehaves Most importantly, color can change our minds -Odili Donald Odita Odita exhibits his large canvases internationally. He has produced several wall paintings installations throughout the US, including the ICA Philadelphia, Princeton University, the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Nasher Museum, Duke University. The lithographic process is exceptionally well- suited to the making of Odita’s Cut. Ultra-thin layers of ink glow with the benefit of the white paper they are laid upon, while shards of striking bright colors are bisected along a diagonal median and fan outwards. Cadences of scale among the range of shapes play against the variety of warm and cool colors. #printmaking #printcollector #etching #engraving #intaglio #reliefprint #woodcut #linocut #lithograph #painting #drawing #collage #ifpda #fineart #artcollector #wpa #atelier17 #socialrealism #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #modernart #contemporaryart #africanamericanart #surrealism #newyorkschool #philadelphia #philadelphiaartist

Martin Puryear is one of the most inventive artists of his generation. He has lived and worked in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In each place he lived, he made an effort to learn techniques from the local #carpenters and #craftsman of the area and translate that knowledge into his aesthetic. He first studied printmaking at the Swedish Royal Academy of Art in 1967, but by the time he enrolled in the MFA program at #yale in 1968, he was a dedicated and #inventive scul...ptor. He returned to printmaking at different times throughout his long career, and his print design reflects sculptural motifs, and one recognizes the connection between the two mediums. Diallo exhibits a deep understanding of its materials. The incredible fuzzy surface of the central shape was achieved by flat biting the copper plate with acid that puddled and pooled in semi-controlled ways. His use of muscle through burnishing and scraping throughout the plate, including the opposing black and white orbs where the metal was polished smooth; the bright white teardrop is an actual hole sliced through the copper plate. "Diallo" is a common name among the Fula people of West Africa and may refer to Puryear's Peace Corps years in Sierra Leone in 1964-66, suggesting a figurative translation of an abstract motif. This incredible intaglio print references past sculptural forms found in Greed's Trophy (1984) and Bearing Witness (1997). Puryear's ability to reinvent and explore motifs over time adds gravity to these invented forms, both on the surface of his prints and the expansive roundness of his sculptures. #printmaking #printcollector #etching #engraving #intaglio #reliefprint #woodcut #linocut #lithograph #painting #drawing #collage #ifpda #fineart #artcollector #wpa #atelier17 #socialrealism #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #modernart #contemporaryart #africanamericanart #surrealism #newyorkschool #philadelphia

Fish Island, 1951 an engraving with color etching by Terry Haass is an uplifting composition illustrating the connection between man and nature. Haass who fled her native #czechoslovakia in the late 1930s due to the rise of #fascism relocated with her family to Paris, and then with the outbreak of WWII, fled to NYC. In 1941 she began studying with Will Barnett at the #artsstudentsleague and Stanley William Hayter at the Atelier 17. By the time this print was made she had mast...ered her printmaking techniques and was co-director of the workshop alongside artist Harry Hoehn when Hayter (after a decade in NYC) returned to Paris. Haass soon followed Hayter back to the ‘city of lights’ and lived and worked there until her death in 2016. Visit our virtual booth @artsy to see more of Haass’ fabulous intaglio & relief prints. #printmaking #printcollector #etching #engraving #intaglio #reliefprint #woodcut #linocut #lithograph #painting #drawing #collage #ifpda #fineart #artcollector #wpa #atelier17 #socialrealism #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #modernart #contemporaryart #africanamericanart #surrealism #newyorkschool

Martin Puryear represented the USA at the Venice Biennale in 2019 and is considered one of our most celebrated sculptors. Print-making has been a constant throughout his distinguished career, and exhibitions celebrating his prints and drawing have appeared at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York and The Art Institute of Chicago. We are proud to offer Phrygian Cap an abstract play on the cloth cap shape, a symbol of freedom during the French Revolution. The cap fills the s...heet, and Puryear enjoys sharing how he thinks about and abstracts form, creating an intriguing design out of the geometry of a known object rather than illustrating the object itself. #printmaking #printcollector #etching #engraving #intaglio #reliefprint #woodcut #linocut #lithograph #painting #drawing #collage #ifpda #fineart #artcollector #wpa #atelier17 #socialrealism #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #modernart #contemporaryart #africanamericanart #surrealism #newyorkschool #philadelphia #philadelphiaartist

What joy there is to be out in nature! Through his confident yet lyrical use of line, Anthony Gross depicts anglers & fly-fishermen within the lush, Burgundy landscape simply enjoying life. Our impression of this etching ‘Canal de Bourgogne’, 1937, is annotated all the best to his good friend Stanley William Hayter. Gross & Hayter (an avid angler) met in 1930’s Paris, worked alongside each other at the Atelier 17 & remained friends throughout their impressive careers.
