A Portland man who watched a solar eclipse in 1963 says the experience left him partially blind in one eye, and now he wants everyone to know the warnings about eye damage during the upcoming eclipse are no joke.
How to Safely view the solar eclipse: Simple Card Projector What you need: 2 Pieces of stiff white cardboard (i.e. 2 paper plates) A Thumbtack or pin... What to do: Make a tiny hole in the middle of one piece of the cardboard. Make sure the hole is round and smooth. With your back toward the sun, hold 1 piece of cardboard above your shoulder, allowing the sun to shine on it. The second piece will act as a screen. Hold it at a distance, and you will see an inverted image of the sun projected through the pinhole. To make the image of the sun larger, hold the screen further away from the pinhole. Keep Safe! Never look at the sun directly without protective eye gear. Even sunglasses cannot protect your eyes from the damage the sun’s rays can cause. Always keep your back towards the sun while looking at a pinhole projection. Do NOT look at the sun through the pinhole!
Solar eclipse safety: Looking at the sun during an eclipse (even with protection) can cause damage called Solar Retinopathy. This causes loss of central vision which is what allows you to read, drive, and work on the computer.... In most cases, the damage is irreversible. Even the darkest sunglasses will not protect your eyes. Special viewing glasses may not be enough to protect you. Not all glasses meet industry standards, and user error (especially in children) can lead to permanent damage. A simple pinhole projector, which you can make at home, is the safest way to view the eclipse. In our area, the eclipse will not be total. This means that it will NEVER be safe to view the eclipse without protection.
Please read and share this post regarding the upcoming solar eclipse. This is very important.
