In honor of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, David Baker, Senior Vice President, Diakon Facilities Management & Technologies shares his tips for reducing cyber threats at home... "Wearing face covers, physically distancing and, in some cases, working remotely have no doubt had an impact on the spread of the novel coronavirus. The spread of cyber threats, however, continues to rise as workers and their families spend more time at home on home networks that are typical...ly easier to break into. IT departments typically implement many security measures to protect workplace computing environments, but most people do not take these same measures at home or even know where to begin." To make your home computing environment more secure, click below for six security must-dos to secure your own home network and make it more difficult for cyber criminals and hackers to attack... https://blog.diakon.org/reducing-cyber-threats-at-home/ #NationalCyberSecurityAwarenessMonth #BeCyberSmart

Benevolent care is a commitment to serve those with limited resources. Diakon maintains a more-than-150-year tradition of care for people of all ages, especially those with limited financial resources. In 2019, we provided more than $1.5 million a month in uncompensated care! Every year our need for benevolent care funding increases. We appreciate your generosity in helping us to bridge this gap! The current pandemic has only exaggerated this situation and we need and value y...our support. Your gifts help us to serve our most vulnerable children, families and older adults. In honor of #GivingTuesday, would you consider making a tax-deductible donation today? You can give on our website at: https://www.diakon.org/giving/online-donation. Thank you for your continued support...lives are being transformed because of it!

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, not every older adult is able to shelter at home indefinitely. There are some older people who need more care to continue to thrive. Sometimes, that situation may be apparent when family members who live at a distance visit for the holidays. More recently, those visits may occur via Zoom or other online means, but the need for long-term care may be apparent nevertheless. So before you talk with an aging family member about the need for long-term... care, connect with us to give you additional information. Our residents can choose from either a private or shared residential apartment within our comfortable, homelike atmosphere. All of our personal care apartments are equipped with a private bath, individually controlled heat and air conditioning, and a kitchenette featuring a sink, microwave and refrigerator. Please email [email protected] for availability and details. It's never too soon to start gathering information!

Our Buffalo Valley community is invited to share God’s Love by packing a shoebox to be sent to children in need around the world. Boys and girls need to know, now more than ever, that God has not forgotten them during this time of fear and uncertainty. Here's how you can help: Pick up an empty shoebox from the front porch of either Janet Temple or Jay and Joyce Clayberger, beginning Monday, November 2.... Return your packed shoebox no later than Sunday, November 15, to those same porches. For the addresses of where to pick up and drop off boxes please contact Pastor Marian at [email protected].

Retired for several years, Peggy and John are in their mid-70s and have owned their current family home for more than 25 years. The home is paid off. However, they’ve been thinking about the future and wondering whether staying in their current home is the right choice. There is value to focusing on mental health especially now! World Mental Health Day 2020 feels like the most significant version of this day yet. The months of loss and isolation have affected all of us differently and prioritizing mental health has never been more important than it is now, note the staff members of Diakon Family Life Services in a new post on Diakon’s Many Voices. One Heart. blog. To learn more about this especially important topic, see the post at http...s://blog.diakon.org/maintaining-mental-wellness-during/ #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth

The Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village campus welcomes many pets in our independent living homes! On Wednesday, October 7, The Reverend Marian K. Anderson, chaplain, conducted a door-to-door ‘Blessing of the Animals’ time of prayer. This special prayer reminded us of God’s love toward all creatures and included the pet’s name along with the names of the owners. Twenty-five homes were visited and lots of licks and purrs were enjoyed on this special day! We are blessed by God at Buffalo Valley and that includes our pets!
