CVATC is sad to report the passing of Richard L. "Dick" Barrick. Dick was a member of CVATC for many years and an active volunteer. He served as the Club's 2nd vice president (1993-1998 and 2002-2006) and as a director (1998-2001). Dick was also the Club's Maintainer Coordinator for many years. In that position he managed the volunteers who maintain the Club's 17 miles of the world famous Appalachian Trail. After Dick gave up the Maintainer Coordinator position in 2006, he was recognized by Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Mid-Atlantic Regional Partnership Committee as its 2007 Volunteer of the Year. The Club sends its condolences to Dick's surviving wife Charlotte and his daughters Nancy Stout and Beth Handzel.

Update (2/25/2021): An ice storm on Sunday, February 14, caused severe damage to multiple transmission towers on lines that cross the #AppalachianTrail on Peter...s Mountain. The damaged towers create a significant safety risk to visitors, so this Trail section will remain closed until the area can be made safe. Due to the size of the damaged towers, proximity to the Trail and the remote location, a timetable for reopening this #AT section is currently unavailable. ATC will work with partners in the area to minimize the effect on long-distance hikers. ---- TRAIL ALERT: Due to an emergency powerline repair, the Appalachian Trail will be closed from VA641/Clendenin Road (northbound mile 641.4) to Pine Swamp Branch Shelter (northbound mile 656.7) beginning on February 15, 2021. Please do not attempt to hike this section until further notice. We will update this post and https://appalachiantrail.org/updates as more information becomes available. See more

In a year when you can never predict what will happen next, most of it challenging and undesirable, we’re rounding out the year with some very unexpected and ve...ry exciting news. I have just been appointed to serve on the President’s Council for Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. I am looking forward to being a voice for outdoor recreation and public lands on a council that has traditionally been focused on mainstream sports. Let’s take a hike America! See more

Same Trail, New Length! The official length of the #AppalachianTrail in 2021 is 2,193.1 miles! This length changes slightly each year due to Trail modifications, like switchbacks and reroutes, and more precise measurement of A.T. sections.
