It is with deep regret that the delegates of the Mount Carmel Volunteer Emergency Services Association announce the the 2020 Picnic In The Park has been CANCELL...ED. The safety of the citizens of our community is our top priority and we felt that the public’s safety could be put at risk with an event like this. We want to thank everyone that has supported us throughout the years and look forward to seeing everyone next year at Picnic In The Park 2021 on July 22, 23, & 24. Our 2020 FUND DRIVE has begun, please help us overcome our losses by donating to the MCVESA fund drive. See more

For immediate release: Come out along the highways and downtown's to welcome this great exhibit next Friday as it rolls into our area! PRESS RELEASE BELOW......... For Immediate Press release. Historic 9/11 Stephen Siller Mobile Exhibit to be on display at All Home Days celebration in Elysburg Area Labor day Weekend. ELYSBURG - On August 30th a historic Mobile 9/11 NEVER FORGET Exhibit will travel through 4 Central Pennsylvania Counties and will end up at its stop at the Ralpho Township Community Park (All Home Days 100th Celebration). Key organizers such as Ralpho Township Supervisors, All Home Days Committee, Elysburg Fire Department 100th, and Ralpho Fire Company of Overlook have anticipated this day for over a year of planning, collecting donations, and raising funds to offset the cost of bringing in such a monumental Exhibit. The Stephen Siller Never Forget Mobile Exhibit has never been in this part Pennsylvania before, making it a must see attraction to anyone within traveling distance to Elysburg, PA expressed Erik Santor Ralpho Fire Co. President. It is truly an honor to bring in this exhibit. Many youth today do not know what that day has meant and this will be a great way to show just what America went through. Our lives have changed due to this tragic day, and the exhibit will educate many. Expressed Harvey Boyer, President of the Elysburg Fire Department. We are expecting thousands to come to the All Home Days celebration to see this free event. Much logistical planning has taken place just to have this large exhibit come into the picnic grounds. Having retired FDNY firefighters to be tour guides will be an honor. On September 11, 2001, Stephen Siller, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word over his scanner of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later. He returned to Squad 1 to get his gear. Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others. In 2013, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation launched its 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit; a tribute to all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including, of course, the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice. The high-tech, 53-foot tractor-trailer, which transforms into a 1,000 square foot exhibit, is a tool to further educate citizens throughout the country about the events of that tragic day. Welcomed around the country, from the Black Hills of South Dakota to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds, the memorial provides interactive education; including artifacts such as steel beams from the towers, documentary videos, and recordings of first responder radio transmissions. Interactive guided tours are carried out by FDNY firefighters who provide firsthand accounts of the day and its aftermath. The 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit, which has traveled to nearly 50 states and Canada, has welcomed in over 350,000 people to date. . tunnel2towers.org- Starting around Noon August 30th, just North of Lewisburg the Mobile Exhibit (tractor-trailer) escorted by Emergency Apparatus, Police, and other groups such as Motorcycles and Jeeps, who have expressed interest in giving the Exhibit a welcome to the area. The escorted truck will travel south to Shamokin Dam to Front Street Sunbury, Water Street Northumberland, Route 11 in Point Township towards Danville. In Danville, it will travel Walnut Street (Rt 11) towards Bloomsburg. Staying on Main Street Bloomsburg to East Street towards River Hill (Route 487). Once in Catawissa it will proceed to Mill Street staying on 487 towards Elysburg. Traveling Route 54 towards Mt Carmel to Route 61. In Mt. Carmel, it will proceed on East Avenue to Market Street, turn at the Anthracite Fire Co. on West 3rd Street. It will continue towards Route 54 (Strong Connector) back to route 61 in Strong and follow Route 61 towards Kulpmont, Coal Township, Shamokin (Independence Street) back to Route 487 to All Home Day Grounds. The 1000+ square foot Exhibit will be open Saturday Aug 31, Sunday Sept. 1st and Monday Labor Day Sept 2nd from 1pm-7pm each day in conjunction with All Home Days 100th Celebration. The Exhibit is free to all. With the anticipation of crowds, we have planned a tent to be located in the waiting line area for cover to weather. Additional Parking will be available at the Elysburg Fire Dept. grounds (1. East Mill Street), 1 block west of the Ralpho Twp, Community Park. contacts about the exhibit are: Erik Santor (570-975-9814) & Harvey Boyer (570-274-5091) contact about the escort is Dennis Kroh (570-490-5131)

The Mount Carmel Area Rescue Squad has purchased a used heavy rescue truck. The apparatus, a 2003 Spartan Gladiator,is powered by a Detroit Diesel, Series 60, 1...2.7 Liter, 430-horsepower engine. The truck is 32 feet in length and has extensive compartmentation with rollup compartment doors. It contains an air cascade system, a 9,000-watt telescoping light tower, generator, winch and other specialized fire/rescue equipment. When completed, it will feature 5 pre-connected Hurst hydraulic tools. Rescue Squad members have already begun work to prepare the Gladiator for service. The organization has significant plans to rehab and customize the unit to meet the needs of the organization’s specialized services. The apparatus customization is being directed by Rescue Squad Captain Tim Brozoskie and First Lieutenant Corey Kent. Members hope to complete the work in the next few months. The new unit will replace the Rescue Squad’s medium-duty KME rescue vehicle, which was placed into service in 1993. The cost of a brand-new heavy rescue truck is outrageous. The Rescue Squad has always lived within its means. We are confident that we will be able to update and customize this unit to meet the needs of the communities of the Mount Carmel Area, stated Rescue Captain Tim Brozoskie . At just twenty percent of the cost of purchasing a new rescue, we will have a heavy-duty rescue truck that will provide basically the same fire/rescue services that a new, excessively expensive rescue unit would provide, Brozoskie continued. It is important to note that no municipal tax dollars will be used to purchase, customize, or equip this new vehicle. All funds were and will be acquired through our annual fundraising drive and fundraising events conducted by our members. We are extremely grateful for the support that citizens of the Mount Carmel Area have given our organization throughout the years, Brozoskie concluded. In addition to the rescue truck, the organization has a 4-wheel-drive quick response medical unit that is also equipped for wilderness and rope rescue.

Another great example of why you should close before you doze. In a post to Facebook, an officer from Cold Springs Harbor Fire Department in New York has urged ...parents to make sure their children's bedroom doors are shut at night. The caption reads: "As a parent it's hard to convince little kids to sleep with the door closed, they always want it open just a little. I do a lot of fire prevention at schools, so one thing I try and stress to the kids is how important it is to sleep with the doors closed." The firefighter wanted to warn parents of the dangers of leaving their children's doors open at night. Credit: Facebook The post continues: "This morning members of New Fairfield's Fire Departments along with mutual aid departments responded to a residential structure fire. The homeowners and family dog are all doing well. "The photos are a great example of the importance of keeping bedroom doors closed while sleeping. The door pictured in both photos is a hollow core door to a bedroom. "While the front of the door is severely damaged the closed door protected the bedroom and its contents. If this were an occupied bedroom the closed door could have saved a life. "The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation and believed to be accidental in nature. (Photos shared with homeowners' consent)." They added: "The first picture is the hallway and the second is from inside the room!" . Thanks for bringing this story to our attention Ryan Ptakowski.

With the potential for a significant snowfall and dropping temperatures in the next few days we would like to pass on a few tips. Adopt a hydrant valuable minu...tes and second can be saved by our men and women who respond to emergencies during and after these storms if we can find and get to a fire hydrant. Check up on your elderly neighbors make sure they have heat, food and medications, and shovel their sidewalks in case they experience a medical emergency. Be aware of low furnace and dryer vents make sure they are not blocked by the snow and they are able to work properly. See more
