With the wind yesterday Station 19 was alerted for multiple tree/wire down incidents just about everywhere in our 140 square mile coverage area. When you encoun...ter one of our Fire Department personnel conducting traffic control and detours, please don't argue with or belittle our members cause you are being inconvenienced by following a detour. Please use extreme caution while driving unfamiliar roads. We're all VOLUNTEERS with a specific goal of assisting those in the time of need. We get absolutely NO reimbursement from the utility companies for our many hours spent for wires and trees down. Last night while operating in Eldred Township, some of our members encountered some extremely rude, inconsiderate motorists. There's no reason for the motoring public to act this way. Every incident scene has an officer or person in charge. If you have a concern, please ask to speak with the OIC. If you are unfamiliar with recognizing the difference between an electric wire or phone wire...STAY AWAY. NEVER drive on or walk near or step over ANY down wire. Fortunately no injuries, burns or electrocution incidents occurred in our area...considering many of the down wires were still charged with electricity hours after they fell to the ground, with some having as much as 34,000 VOLTS in them.

It’s not uncommon for us to be dispatched to an electric pole or transformer fire. In case you ever happen to see that occur and watch us on scene, you’ll notice we will not try to put out the fire. What we are actually doing is assessing the damage, contacting utility companies, keeping the public out of dangerous areas, and making sure the fire does not spread. And here’s why!
